Discover Ocracoke Island

Nestled quietly among the windswept barrier islands of the Outer Banks, Ocracoke Island offers travelers a rare blend of history, natural beauty, and serene escape. Known for its unspoiled beaches, rich maritime history, and charming village atmosphere, Ocracoke is a destination that feels like stepping back in time—and a perfect getaway for anyone seeking to unplug and unwind along North Carolina’s coast.

A Storied History on Ocracoke Island

Ocracoke’s history runs deep. The island was originally inhabited by the Algonquian-speaking Native Americans, and European settlers arrived in the early 1700s. Its strategic location made it a hub for shipping, fishing, and, infamously, piracy.

Perhaps the most famous chapter in Ocracoke’s story is its connection to the notorious pirate Blackbeard (Edward Teach). In 1718, Blackbeard met his demise in a fierce battle near Ocracoke Inlet. The island today honors this legacy with local tours and museums that bring pirate lore to life.

During the Civil War, Ocracoke’s harbor served as a refuge and base for Confederate blockade runners. Later, in the 20th century, it became a quiet fishing village that slowly embraced tourism while preserving its historic charm.

What Makes Ocracoke Island Special?

  • Limited Access: Ocracoke is reachable only by ferry from the mainland or neighboring islands, by private boat, or small plane. This limited access keeps the island peaceful, avoiding the crowds found at more commercialized Outer Banks spots.

  • Natural Beauty: Miles of wide, pristine beaches stretch along the island’s coastline, perfect for sunbathing, swimming, and beachcombing. The island’s maritime forests, salt marshes, and tidal creeks make it a haven for birdwatchers and nature lovers.

  • Small Village Charm: The heart of Ocracoke is its quaint village, with cozy inns, historic cottages, locally owned restaurants serving fresh seafood, and unique shops selling handcrafted goods. The pace here is slow and welcoming.

Things to See and Do on Ocracoke Island

  1. Visit the Ocracoke Lighthouse:
One of the oldest operating lighthouses in the U.S., dating back to 1823, it’s a picturesque landmark and perfect photo spot.

  2. Explore Blackbeard’s Legacy:
Visit the Ocracoke Preservation Society Museum to learn about pirate lore, local history, and maritime culture.

  3. Beach Time:
Spend time at the pristine Ocracoke Beach or the quieter Cove Dunes Beach, both offering stunning ocean views and peaceful settings.

  4. Wildlife Watching:
Go kayaking or paddleboarding in the island’s salt marshes, where you can spot dolphins, ospreys, and wild horses.

  5. Go Fishing:
Whether from the pier or on a charter boat, fishing is a popular pastime, with opportunities to catch red drum, flounder, and bluefish.

  6. Bike Around the Island:
With limited traffic and flat terrain, biking is one of the best ways to explore the island’s sights and hidden corners.

Ocracoke Island is a treasure tucked away along North Carolina’s coast—where history, nature, and small-town charm come together. Whether you’re fascinated by pirate stories, looking to unwind on quiet beaches, or eager to explore natural habitats, Ocracoke offers a uniquely authentic coastal experience away from the crowds.

11 NC River Sites Fail Bacteria Test, Raising Health Concerns

Eleven popular river access sites across eastern North Carolina have failed water quality tests for fecal bacteria this week, according to the environmental watchdog group Sound Rivers. The contamination, likely caused by stormwater runoff, includes locations along the Neuse and Tar-Pamlico Rivers—prompting officials to warn against swimming or wading due to potential health risks such as skin infections and gastrointestinal illness.

Fire Displaces Four in Cary Townhome Community

A Friday afternoon fire in a Cary townhome left four people displaced after flames and thick smoke engulfed a unit on Bay Drive. Fire crews responded quickly around 1:15 p.m. and were able to evacuate residents safely, with no injuries reported. Dramatic video footage showed smoke billowing into the sky as firefighters worked to contain the blaze. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Wake County Considers Calendar Changes for Three Schools

Wake County Public Schools is proposing calendar changes for the 2027–28 school year that could impact three elementary schools—Oakview, Pleasant Union, and North Forest Pines. The district is considering shifting these under-enrolled year-round schools to a traditional calendar to better balance student enrollment across the county. Families and staff will be surveyed before any final decisions are made. The move is part of a broader strategy to ease overcrowding at some schools by adjusting calendar models.

🐢 North Carolina’s Sea Turtle Week: A Celebration of Community and Conservation

This June, North Carolina came together to celebrate Sea Turtle Week, a special time dedicated to protecting one of our state’s most treasured coastal residents—the endangered sea turtle.

From June 9th to 13th, communities up and down the coast joined forces with organizations like the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission and the Sea Turtle Project to raise awareness and take action. Beach cleanups, educational programs, and volunteer efforts helped safeguard sea turtle nests and ensure hatchlings have the best chance to make it safely to the ocean.

One standout initiative was the ā€œAdopt-a-Nestā€ program, inviting families and individuals to sponsor sea turtle nests. This program not only funded vital conservation work but also gave participants a hands-on way to connect with nature and support local wildlife.

The week’s highlight was a joyful community gathering at Fort Fisher State Recreation Area, where volunteers and families celebrated by releasing rehabilitated sea turtles back into the wild—a moving reminder of what we can achieve when we work together.

Sea Turtle Week showcased the heart and dedication of North Carolinians to protecting our environment and preserving the beauty of our coastline for generations to come.

"And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up."

If you're craving soul-satisfying food with a side of culinary greatness, look no further than Poole’s Diner in downtown Raleigh. This beloved local spot isn’t just a restaurant—it’s a landmark of flavor, community, and serious talent.

Poole’s Diner is the crown jewel of Raleigh’s own Chef Ashley Christensen, one of the most celebrated chefs in the South.
