On her 30th birthday, Shalini went to dinner with her husband, Dee, at Vidrio’s in Glenwood South. As they took in the restaurants, the people and the energy of the neighborhood, she began to imagine a future there.

Shalini knew the business well. Her family had built Burger Village in New York, and she had worked alongside her brothers for years. She started as a server and became a manager, learning what it takes to keep a restaurant running—and how much the people inside it matter.

She and Dee had married in 2019, spent time in California, and moved to North Carolina in 2020. Opening a restaurant here had never been part of their original plan. But after that birthday dinner, the idea stayed with them. They searched Cary, Morrisville, Apex, Raleigh and Durham for the right space. After looking across the Triangle, they would build their restaurant beside the very place where Shalini first imagined it. The location felt even more meaningful because Raleigh was becoming home. Their first daughter was born here. They bought their first home together here. Burger Village would let them invest in the community where they were building their family’s life.

Raleigh Burger Village brought something distinctive to Glenwood South: burgers made with choices such as bison, elk, lamb and Wagyu, alongside its focus on organic ingredients. Shalini and Dee remain proud of those offerings. They are equally proud that the restaurant has grown by listening to the people it serves.

Customers wanted familiar favorites as well as something adventurous. They wanted choices that worked for the whole table, whether it was a family dinner or a night out with friends. The couple took that feedback seriously.

The Glenwood Smash, created for the Raleigh location, combines American cheese, sautéed onions, lettuce, tomato, pickles and Burger Village’s signature sauce. Guests can also build their own burger, choosing a protein and toppings that suit them. The menu includes wings, grilled chicken sandwiches, salads, vegetarian and plant-based options, along with the specialty burgers that first set Burger Village apart.

Dee and Shalini want Burger Village’s value to Raleigh to reach beyond its dining room. They have worked with local schools, organizations, community groups, events, and they embrace opportunities for fundraisers and partnerships. They also believe in supporting other local businesses and creators.

Dee often moves from table to table, asking guests what they ordered and how they are doing. He learns their names and listens to their stories. Shalini says a short check-in can turn into a long conversation.

Dee always tells the team, “If someone chooses to spend even a dollar with us, we should make them feel that their choice mattered.”

That belief gives Burger Village its heart. A meal may last an hour, but the welcome can bring someone back months later. Shalini’s proudest moments include recognizing returning guests, seeing them bring family and friends, and hearing that someone remembers a conversation they had with Dee.

Shalini is quick to credit everyone who cooks a burger, serves a table, tends the bar, or washes dishes after a long night. Some team members have watched the couple’s daughter grow up. Shalini and Dee, in turn, have shared in milestones in their employees’ lives.

A small business asks a great deal of the people behind it. There are difficult days, mistakes to work through, and constant decisions about how to improve. There is pride, too—in a team that shows up for one another, and in a guest who chooses to return.
