Discover the Charm and History of Garner, NC

Nestled just south of Raleigh, Garner, North Carolina, is a hidden gem with a rich history, vibrant arts scene, and a variety of activities for visitors of all ages. With roots dating back to the 1750s, the town's evolution from a rural settlement to a thriving community was significantly influenced by the arrival of the North Carolina Railroad in the 1850s. Officially incorporated in 1905, Garner has since blossomed into a welcoming suburban town, preserving its historical charm while offering modern amenities and events.

For those looking to explore the history of Garner, the Garner History Museum at the Depot offers an intimate glimpse into the town's past. Housed in a restored 1900 railroad depot, the museum showcases the town’s transformation, from its early days as a small community to its growth into the town it is today. The museum is open on Wednesdays and Saturdays and provides a unique experience for history buffs.

Garner also offers plenty of opportunities for cultural experiences. The Garner Performing Arts Center is a local hub where you can enjoy live theater performances by the Towne Players of Garner and other regional artists. Whether you're a fan of the arts or looking for a night of entertainment, the center is a great spot to visit. Outdoor lovers will appreciate the town's green spaces, with Lake Benson Park providing scenic walking trails, picnic areas, and a large lake for fishing and boating. Nearby, White Deer Park offers additional trails and educational programs, making it a perfect place for families to explore the natural beauty of the area.

One of the most charming spots in Garner is its historic downtown district. Walking through the area, you can admire early 20th-century architecture and explore local shops and eateries. The district is even listed on the National Register of Historic Places, making it a must-see for anyone interested in the town's architectural heritage.

Fun facts about Garner add to the town’s unique character. For example, Garner was home to the town's first telephone service in 1912, which was operated from a local home. The town is also connected by one of North Carolina's oldest and most traveled routes, the Central Highway, which eventually became U.S. 70. Over the years, Garner has continued to grow, but it has maintained a small-town charm that visitors appreciate.

Garner is also known for its vibrant community events, and you’ll find numerous activities year-round. Whether you’re attending a local festival, exploring the arts scene, or enjoying the great outdoors, Garner has something for everyone. For more information on upcoming events and attractions, be sure to check out the official town website and plan your visit today.

Whether you’re here for a day or longer, Garner’s combination of history, culture, and natural beauty makes it a wonderful destination for all ages.

What’s Happening in Wake County?

Third Suspect Arrested in Garner Kidnapping Case

Wake County, NC — Authorities have arrested a third suspect in connection with a recent kidnapping that shook the Garner community. On Friday morning, 37-year-old Eleodoro “Leo” Estrada-Hernandez was taken into custody and booked into the Wake County Detention Center.

Estrada-Hernandez is one of three individuals accused of abducting a young mother and her 11-month-old child earlier this month. The victims were safely located, and the two other suspects were previously arrested.

While specific details about the motive or Estrada-Hernandez's role in the incident have not yet been released, law enforcement officials say the investigation remains active. They are continuing to gather information and are urging anyone with knowledge of the case to come forward.

This case has raised serious concerns among local residents, prompting increased attention from both local and federal agencies. Updates will be shared as more details become available.

Cybersecurity Breach Puts North Carolina

Student Data at Risk

A recent cybersecurity breach exposed sensitive student data for millions of North Carolina students, sparking concerns over identity theft and data security. The breach stemmed from vulnerabilities in a state-run student management system, which failed to properly safeguard personal information like social security numbers and academic records. Hackers were able to exploit this weakness, potentially compromising the data of countless students across the state.

If you suspect your information may have been affected, it’s important to take immediate steps to safeguard your identity:

  1. Monitor Credit Reports: Regularly check for unusual activity, such as accounts you didn’t open or unfamiliar transactions.

  2. Place Fraud Alerts or Credit Freezes: Consider putting a fraud alert or freeze on your credit reports to make it harder for thieves to open new accounts.

  3. Sign Up for Identity Theft Protection: Services can monitor your credit, alert you to suspicious activity, and help recover your identity.

  4. Monitor Bank Accounts: Keep an eye on your financial accounts for unauthorized transactions.

  5. Be Aware of Phishing Scams: Hackers may use your information to pose as trusted entities. Always verify requests for personal information.

  6. Change Passwords: Update passwords for online accounts, using strong, unique passwords and enabling multi-factor authentication when possible.

While these actions can help protect against immediate threats, experts warn that the risk of identity theft may continue. The stolen data—like social security numbers—doesn’t expire, meaning it can be used for years in identity fraud, tax scams, or phishing attacks. As such, the full scope of the breach remains a concern, and ongoing vigilance is essential.

This incident highlights the urgent need for stronger cybersecurity in public school systems, as educational institutions increasingly rely on digital platforms to manage sensitive data. In the meantime, individuals must remain proactive in monitoring their information and securing their personal data against future risks.

Bridge to Home RFP Opens for Homeless and Housing Service Expansion in Wake County

Wake County is expanding its commitment to addressing homelessness through the Bridge to Home initiative, which is now accepting proposals for new or enhanced housing and support services. This Request for Proposals (RFP) invites experienced organizations to submit plans that will help connect individuals and families experiencing homelessness with safe, stable housing and supportive resources.

The county is seeking innovative, collaborative approaches in key service areas, including outreach, emergency shelter, transitional housing, rapid rehousing, and permanent supportive housing. Programs should embrace a Housing First model and be rooted in equity, trauma-informed care, and long-term stability.

Eligible applicants include nonprofit organizations, government entities, and community-based providers with demonstrated success in housing and homelessness services. Proposals will be evaluated for impact, readiness, inclusivity, and alignment with Wake County’s strategic housing goals.

🗓️ Submission Deadline: Friday, May 17, 2025, by 2:00 PM ET
🌐 Learn more and apply at: https://wakegov.com/housing/rfp

This is a unique opportunity for local partners to play a key role in building a stronger safety net—and ensuring more residents can bridge the gap to a permanent home.

Be Aware: Snake Season in Wake County Is Here

As spring turns to summer, Wake County residents should be aware that snake activity increases during the warmer months, typically from March through October. Whether you're hiking local trails, working in your garden, or simply walking your dog through the neighborhood, there's a higher chance of spotting a snake this time of year.

Most of the snakes found in North Carolina are harmless and actually help control pests. However, there are six venomous species statewide, and the copperhead is the most commonly seen in Wake County. Copperheads are recognized by their light brown color and distinctive hourglass markings. Though not usually aggressive, they will bite if they feel threatened.

Other venomous species found in North Carolina—though rarely in Wake County—include the cottonmouth (water moccasin), timber rattlesnake, pigmy rattlesnake, eastern diamondback rattlesnake, and eastern coral snake.

To reduce your chances of a close encounter:

  • Keep yards tidy: Mow the lawn regularly, trim shrubs, and remove piles of wood or debris where snakes may hide.

  • Wear proper footwear: When hiking or doing yard work, wear closed-toe shoes or boots—especially in tall grass or wooded areas.

  • Use lights at night: If you’re outside after dark, use a flashlight to check your path.

  • Stay alert: Teach children to be cautious in natural areas and to never touch a snake.

🚨 What To Do If You See a Snake

  • Stay calm: Most snakes will retreat if left alone.

  • Back away slowly: Don’t try to touch or move the snake.

  • Call animal control if the snake is in or near your home.

🩺 If Bitten by a Snake

If you or someone you know is bitten by a snake:

  1. Call 911 immediately.

  2. Keep the affected limb still and below heart level.

  3. Do not attempt to suck out venom, apply ice, or use a tourniquet.

  4. Take note of the snake’s appearance (if safe to do so) for identification.

Snakes are a natural and important part of our local ecosystem, but that doesn’t mean we can’t be cautious. By staying aware and taking simple precautions, families in Wake County can enjoy the outdoors safely during snake season.

Have you spotted a snake recently? Let others know where and what type in your neighborhood watch or community group to help everyone stay informed.

This Week’s Featured Essential Oil

Bergamot Essential Oil

A Citrus Scent with Powerful Benefits

Bergamot essential oil, derived from the rind of the Citrus bergamia fruit, is a fragrant and versatile oil widely used in aromatherapy, skincare, and even the food and beverage industry. Best known as the distinct flavor in Earl Grey tea, this essential oil offers a wide array of benefits for the body and mind.

Bergamot is primarily grown in southern Italy, where the climate and soil conditions are ideal. The essential oil is cold-pressed from the peel of the fruit, producing a light greenish-yellow oil with a fresh, sweet, and slightly spicy citrus aroma.

One of the most well-known uses of bergamot oil is for its uplifting and calming effects. Inhaling its scent can:

  • Help relieve stress, anxiety, and depression

  • Promote a sense of relaxation and well-being

  • Support better sleep quality when diffused before bedtime

It is often used in blends for mood enhancement or in meditation practices for its grounding-yet-light aroma.

Bergamot oil is prized in natural skincare, but with a note of caution (see safety tips below). It offers:

  • Antibacterial and antiseptic properties that help with acne and oily skin

  • Support in treating eczema and psoriasis

  • A brightening effect when diluted and applied to skin (in the absence of sun exposure)

It is also added to shampoos for its refreshing scent and potential to help control oily scalp conditions.

Other Uses

  • Digestive aid: When used in massage (properly diluted), bergamot oil can relieve indigestion and bloating.

  • Natural deodorizer: Its clean scent makes it ideal for DIY perfumes, room sprays, and cleaning products.

  • Immune booster: Some studies suggest bergamot oil may help stimulate immune response due to its antimicrobial properties.

Bergamot essential oil contains compounds known as furocoumarins, which can cause photosensitivity—a reaction that can lead to burns or skin discoloration when exposed to sunlight after topical use. To use safely:

  • Always dilute with a carrier oil before applying to the skin

  • Avoid direct sun or UV exposure for at least 12 hours after application

  • Choose furocoumarin-free (FCF) versions if available for topical use

Bergamot essential oil is a powerful and pleasant tool in the world of natural wellness. Whether you're looking to lift your mood, clear your skin, or simply enjoy its crisp citrus aroma, this oil is a beautiful addition to your essential oil collection—used safely and wisely.

Big Ed’s in Garner: A Taste of Southern Tradition

Tucked along Timber Drive in Garner, North Carolina, Big Ed’s Restaurant is more than just a place to grab a bite—it’s a continuation of a local legacy that began more than six decades ago. Known for its warm hospitality and timeless comfort food, Big Ed’s in Garner brings the charm of old-school Southern cooking to a growing community that values tradition as much as taste.

The original Big Ed’s was founded in 1958 by Ed Watkins, a Wake County native who crafted his recipes from childhood meals on his family’s farm. After decades of success in Raleigh, the restaurant’s spirit expanded to Garner in 2019, where the same dedication to homestyle cooking and community values now thrives.

Stepping into Big Ed’s in Garner is like stepping into a cozy country kitchen. Breakfast is served all day, featuring oversized pancakes, flaky biscuits smothered in sausage gravy, and thick slices of country ham. Weekday lunch and dinner menus offer comfort classics like fried catfish, chicken salad sandwiches, and down-home vegetable sides that taste like they came straight from a Southern garden.

Big Ed’s has quickly become a favorite among Garner residents, appreciated for its hearty portions, reasonable prices, and inviting staff. Locals often rave about the "larger-than-life" pancakes and the feeling of being treated like family. The décor is simple but nostalgic, evoking the feel of a farmhouse kitchen, with checkered tablecloths and walls lined with vintage memorabilia.

What sets Big Ed’s apart, aside from the food, is its commitment to consistency and heart. Whether it’s your first visit or your fiftieth, you can count on a plate that’s been prepared with care and a greeting that feels like home.

Now operated by Sam and Lynn Hobgood, who took over the original restaurant in 2006, the Garner location holds true to Big Ed Watkins’ founding principles: good food, made right, served with genuine Southern hospitality. The Hobgoods have been careful stewards of this legacy, ensuring that every dish—from grits to gravy—honors the original recipes while still fitting into the rhythm of modern life.

Whether you’re a lifelong fan or a curious newcomer, Big Ed’s in Garner offers a dining experience that feels like Sunday supper at grandma’s house—no reservation required.
