Hello, friends!
Today, on National Hole in My Bucket Day, we tip our hats to a simple old folk tune that has echoed through generations: “There’s a hole in my bucket, dear Liza, dear Liza…” What seems like a lighthearted, circular conversation between Henry and Liza is, in fact, a gentle metaphor for life’s little cycles—those tasks we delay, the small problems that lead to bigger ones, and the humor we must hold onto along the way.
It’s easy to overlook the “holes” in our daily routines: a forgotten thank-you, a missed opportunity to pause and breathe, or an overdue moment of self-care. Today reminds us that these small gaps matter. And like Henry and Liza’s never-ending dialogue, we often find ourselves circling back to the same to-dos until we finally fix what needs mending.
So take a moment today to patch your own metaphorical bucket. Tend to the little things you've been putting off—not out of pressure, but out of kindness to yourself. Laugh a little, forgive a little, and keep your heart light.
Because sometimes, the hole in the bucket isn’t a problem to fix, but a gentle nudge to slow down, reflect, and remember that life doesn’t have to be perfect—it just has to keep flowing.
See you out there in beautiful Wake,
Diane

Discover North Carolina’s National Parks
North Carolina is blessed with spectacular natural beauty, and two of its crown jewels are its national parks — Great Smoky Mountains National Park and Cape Hatteras National Seashore. Each offers visitors a unique experience, from mist-covered mountain peaks to pristine coastal dunes. Here’s what you need to know to explore these treasures.
Great Smoky Mountains National Park
History & Significance:
Established in 1934, Great Smoky Mountains National Park was created to preserve the stunning mountain landscapes along the Tennessee-North Carolina border. The park protects one of the oldest mountain ranges in the world and is renowned for its rich biodiversity, ancient forests, and cultural heritage. It’s also a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is the most visited national park in the U.S., drawing millions of visitors every year.
Points of Interest:
Clingmans Dome: The highest point in the park at 6,643 feet, featuring an observation tower with panoramic views of the Smokies.
Cades Cove: A beautiful valley offering wildlife viewing, historic cabins, and scenic loops perfect for biking or driving.
Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail: A one-way loop through lush forest, waterfalls, and historic homesteads.
Appalachian Trail: This famous hiking trail stretches over 70 miles through the park, attracting backpackers and day hikers alike.
Waterfalls: More than 100 waterfalls, including Laurel Falls, Rainbow Falls, and Grotto Falls.
Visiting Tips:
Spring and fall are ideal times to visit, with wildflowers blooming in spring and stunning foliage colors in autumn.
Arrive early for popular spots like Cades Cove to avoid crowds.
Bring sturdy hiking shoes and plenty of water for trails.
Wildlife is abundant—remember to observe from a safe distance and never feed the animals.
Cape Hatteras National Seashore
History & Significance:
Established in 1953, Cape Hatteras National Seashore was the first national seashore created in the United States. It spans over 70 miles of barrier islands along North Carolina’s Outer Banks, preserving fragile coastal ecosystems, sandy beaches, and maritime history. The park is crucial for protecting sea turtle nesting sites and migratory birds.
Points of Interest:
Cape Hatteras Lighthouse: The tallest brick lighthouse in the U.S., famous for its distinctive black-and-white spiral pattern and a rich maritime history.
Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge: A haven for birdwatchers, especially during migration seasons, with species like ospreys, herons, and shorebirds.
Fishing and Surfing: The Outer Banks are a premier destination for saltwater fishing and some of the best surfing on the East Coast.
Wildlife Viewing: Besides sea turtles, visitors may spot dolphins, seals, and a variety of shorebirds.
Visiting Tips:
Summer is the most popular season; early morning or late afternoon visits help avoid the crowds and heat.
Beaches are generally open for swimming, but always check for local advisories about currents and wildlife.
Bring sunscreen, water, and insect repellent — the coastal environment can be intense.
Respect protected wildlife areas, especially during sea turtle nesting season (May–October).
Final Thoughts
Whether you seek the serene mountain trails of the Great Smoky Mountains or the rugged coastal charm of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina’s national parks offer unforgettable adventures and rich history. Both parks provide visitors with the chance to connect deeply with nature, learn about local culture, and create lasting memories.
Plan your visit, take only pictures, leave only footprints, and enjoy the natural beauty that makes North Carolina so special.

Wake County Schools to Draft AI Policy
Wake County Public School System leaders are developing a new policy to guide the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in classrooms. The policy will outline how students and staff can use AI tools responsibly, with a focus on safety, digital literacy, and future readiness.
Students 13 and older may be allowed to use certain AI platforms—like Google Gemini—that meet federal privacy guidelines. School board members are weighing both the opportunities and ethical concerns of AI in education.
“We can’t afford to push back on innovation if we want to prepare students for the real world,” said Board Vice Chair Tyler Swanson. Read More
DOJ Sues North Carolina Over Voter List Issues
The U.S. Department of Justice has filed a lawsuit against North Carolina, claiming the state failed to comply with federal law by not properly collecting required ID information during voter registration.
Under the Help America Vote Act (HAVA), voters must provide a driver’s license number or the last four digits of their Social Security number—or be assigned a unique ID if they lack both. The DOJ says North Carolina did not consistently meet this requirement.
The suit calls for the state to create a plan within 30 days to contact affected voters and correct the records. The State Board of Elections says it’s reviewing the complaint and working to address the issue. Read More

Minors caught drinking can also face fines, community service, and a driver’s license suspension.
These tough laws exist to protect young people from the risks of underage drinking. So, parents should know: allowing minors to drink at home is against the law in NC. Read More

🌟 The Power of Unexpected Friendship: A 5-Year-Old and a 73-Year-Old Show Us What Really Matters
In a quiet corner of Pittsfield, Maine, a friendship has bloomed that defies age, expectations, and time itself. What started as a few friendly visits turned into a heartwarming bond between 5-year-old Oliver and his 73-year-old neighbor, Debbie Varney—proving that love, kindness, and connection know no bounds.
It all began when Oliver’s family moved into a rental home owned by Debbie. Recently widowed and living alone, Debbie welcomed the new tenants without realizing one of them would soon become a daily source of joy and companionship.
Each day, little Oliver would wander over to Debbie’s house to chat, play games, and help with small outdoor chores. As the seasons passed, their connection deepened. What might have looked like an ordinary neighborly interaction became something much more meaningful: a friendship that lifted both their spirits.
Debbie, once resigned to a quieter life after the loss of her husband, found herself laughing again, gardening again, and feeling the warmth of being needed and loved. Meanwhile, Oliver was learning valuable lessons—patience, compassion, and the simple joy of being present with someone who listens.
Oliver’s mother, Michaela, was so moved by their bond that she began documenting their moments together. The heartfelt videos quickly spread online, touching hearts across the country. But beyond the clicks and likes, what really resonated was the reminder that real connection doesn't require flashy plans or fancy events—just time, care, and a willingness to be there for one another.
“Debbie has become more than just a neighbor,” Michaela shared. “She’s a part of our family now.”
Their story reminds us all that in an age of digital distractions and busy schedules, we can still find magic in the everyday. Whether it’s sharing a conversation, pulling weeds in the garden, or waving from across the driveway, it’s often the smallest gestures that make the biggest difference.
So the next time you see a neighbor—especially one who may be alone—consider saying hello. You might just change a life. Or, if you’re lucky, find a lifelong friend.
“Believe in the beauty of our future, for it is shaped by the hope and dreams we nurture today.”
