Hello, friends!
Today, we celebrate a whimsical and wonderful occasion — Hot Air Balloon Day — a tribute to one of the most magical inventions to ever grace the skies!
There’s something undeniably enchanting about hot air balloons — the way they drift quietly over treetops, their vibrant colors painting the sky at sunrise or sunset. For centuries, they’ve sparked wonder, symbolized freedom, and invited us to dream a little higher.
Did you know the very first passengers in a hot air balloon were a sheep, a duck, and a rooster? That historic flight took place in France in 1783, and ever since, hot air ballooning has grown into a beloved tradition around the globe. From quiet countryside floats to colorful festivals with glowing balloon “night glows,” it’s an experience that fills the heart with awe.
Here in North Carolina, we’re lucky to be home to one of the country’s most cherished ballooning events — the Carolina BalloonFest in Statesville each October. If you’ve never been, mark your calendar — it’s pure joy for all ages!
So today, take a moment to look up. Let your imagination soar. Maybe even plan your own skyward adventure someday. Because sometimes, all it takes is a little hot air and a lot of heart to lift us to new heights.
See you out there in beautiful Wake,
Diane

🐾 Rebuilding Hope in the Mountains: North Carolina Teens Step Up for a Neighbor in Need
When Hurricane Helene tore through Western North Carolina in late 2024, it left behind more than wreckage — it uncovered the strength, generosity, and heart of a community determined to care for its own.
Among those affected was Sherry Housley, a beloved artist from Burnsville, whose home was completely destroyed by the storm. For months, she lived in a camper, unsure of what would come next — until a remarkable group of local high school students stepped in.
Led by their teacher, Jeremy Dotts, the Mountain Heritage High School honors carpentry class joined forces with the nonprofit Rebuilding Hollers to build Sherry a brand-new tiny home. These students, most still teenagers, poured their time and talent into every beam and board — and gave Sherry something more valuable than shelter: a fresh start.
"I call them my angels," Sherry said tearfully, "They gave me hope when I had none."
But this story is just one of many acts of kindness that swept across Western North Carolina in the storm’s aftermath:
💛 In Asheville, Chef Meherwan Irani and the team at Chai Pani prepared over 30,000 meals for storm victims — some flown in by helicopter to cut-off mountain towns.
🏡 Local businesses, like Rosetta's Kitchen and Firestorm Books, turned their storefronts into community support hubs, offering not just supplies, but safety, warmth, and connection.
These stories remind us that heroism doesn't always wear a uniform — sometimes, it wears work boots, aprons, or even high school letterman jackets.
In times of crisis, North Carolinians don’t just rebuild homes — they rebuild hope.
