Hello friends!

As we head into the heart of summer and prepare for the 4th of July, let’s take a moment to think about what truly makes this holiday—and this country—so special.

It’s not just the fireworks or parades. It’s the people around us—the friends, the neighbors, the quiet helpers who turn a simple day into something unforgettable.

In a small town in Nebraska, a single dad named Mike wanted to give his daughter the “best Fourth ever.” It had been a tough year financially, and he couldn’t afford a big celebration. But that didn’t stop him. He built a “firework fort” out of cardboard boxes in their backyard, played patriotic music from his phone, made red-white-and-blue Jello, and lit sparklers as the sun went down. His daughter beamed and said, “This was better than Disney.”

Sometimes, love is the best firework of all.

This week, may we all find ways—big or small—to share the joy. Knock on a neighbor’s door. Invite someone new to your cookout. Wave to the folks setting up chairs for the parade. The spirit of community doesn’t come from grand gestures—it’s built in the little things we do for one another.

From our Wake County family to yours, we wish you a joyful, safe, and meaningful Independence Day

See you out there in beautiful Wake,
Diane

A Little-Known North Carolina Story from the Revolutionary War: The Halifax Resolves

Most people know about major battles and famous declarations during the Revolutionary War, but few realize that North Carolina was the first colony to officially call for independence from Britain — with the Halifax Resolves in April 1776.

Adopted by the Fourth Provincial Congress in Halifax, NC, this groundbreaking resolution gave North Carolina’s delegates the authority to join other colonies in seeking full independence. It was the first official action by any colony encouraging a break from British rule, predating the national Declaration of Independence by two months.

This bold step showed North Carolina’s leadership and willingness to push the revolution forward, setting a precedent that helped unite the colonies around the cause of freedom.

So next time you think about the birth of America, remember that North Carolina wasn’t just part of the fight — it led the charge in making independence official.
