Hello friends!

As we approach Independence Day, we want to wish each of you a joyful, meaningful, and safe Fourth of July. Whether you're heading to a local parade, grilling in the backyard, or simply enjoying a quiet moment under the stars—this is a time to celebrate our freedoms, reflect on our shared values, and connect with the people around us.

In the spirit of community, we wanted to share a story from Willow Creek, a small rural town in South Dakota. Just last year, their annual 4th of July parade was nearly canceled due to budget cuts. But the heart of the town wouldn’t let it happen. Local businesses and residents came together, raising the needed funds in less than a week. Kids decorated bikes with red, white, and blue streamers, the fire department proudly rolled out their trucks, and a group of senior veterans led the way on foot.

It wasn’t flashy—but it was real.

As one elderly spectator said through tears, “This is what America’s all about—showing up for each other.”

We couldn’t agree more.

In that spirit, we encourage you to look out for one another this week. Watch out for pets during fireworks. Drive safely. Lend a hand where you can. Celebrate with love, with laughter, and with gratitude.

📬 Please note: There will be no newsletter published on Friday, July 4th, as we take time to celebrate with our own families and neighbors. We'll return with fresh updates after the holiday weekend!

From all of us here at Wake Forest News and Events—have a wonderful Fourth.

See you out there in beautiful Wake,
Diane

What’s Happening in Wake County?

Wake County Housing Market vs. U.S. Trends

Wake County’s housing market shows resilience as the national market cools. Here’s how they compare:

  • Median Sale Price: Wake County’s median price is about $489,565 (down 2.1% YoY), while the national median dropped 4.5%.

  • Homes Sold: Wake County sales rose 4.3% to 1,641 homes; nationally, sales declined about 1.2%.

  • Days on Market: Wake homes average 31 days listed; nationally, it’s about 35 days, indicating buyers are taking more time.

  • Inventory: Wake’s listings grew 8.2% to 6,656 homes, offering more options; nationwide, inventory is up but still tight in many metros.

Market Outlook: Buyers in Wake County now have more leverage, with nearly half of homes selling at or below asking price. Sellers should expect longer listing times and price homes carefully. Ongoing developments like Rockway and North Hills Innovation District continue to boost local demand.

Overall, Wake County’s market remains stable and balanced, contrasting with broader U.S. cooling trends. For successful buying or selling, working with a local real estate expert is key.

North Carolina’s Unsung Revolutionary War Heroes: The Overmountain Men

When thinking about North Carolina’s role in the fight for independence, one remarkable but often overlooked group stands out—the Overmountain Men. These frontier militia fighters from western North Carolina and nearby Appalachian regions played a crucial role in securing American victory during the Revolutionary War.

In 1780, after the British victory at the Battle of Camden left southern patriot forces in disarray, the Overmountain Men answered the call. They gathered at the base of the Appalachian Mountains, crossing rough terrain to confront British loyalists in what became the Battle of Kings Mountain.

This 1780 clash, fought entirely between American militias, was a decisive patriot victory. The Overmountain Men’s rugged marksmanship and guerrilla tactics overwhelmed the British forces, dealing a major blow to British control in the South.

Their victory at Kings Mountain energized the revolutionary cause and helped turn the tide of the Southern Campaign, leading to eventual British surrender at Yorktown.

The courage and determination of these backcountry fighters highlight North Carolina’s vital and unique contribution to America’s independence—showing that the fight was not just on famous battlefields but also in the rugged frontier.

As of 2024, Wake County’s population is estimated at around R, marking a 2.4% increase from the previous year. This growth continues the county’s steady upward trend, with the population rising by 35.5% since 2010. Wake Expands Greenway to Boost Recreation and Connectivity

Wake County is set to add over 50 miles of new greenway trails in the next five years, connecting neighborhoods, parks, and schools. The multi-use trails will support walking, biking, and jogging, with added amenities like rest areas and educational signs.

The project aims to promote outdoor activity, reduce traffic, and improve air quality. Funding comes from county budgets, state grants, and private partners, with construction starting later this year.

Residents can join community meetings to share input. This expansion reflects Wake County’s commitment to healthy living and sustainable growth.

🌟 Durham Students Create “Kindness Kits” for Homeless Youth

In Durham, a group of high school students from Riverside High launched a project called Kindness Kits to support homeless youth in their community. The students collect donations of essentials like socks, toiletries, snacks, and water bottles, then assemble and distribute the kits through local shelters and outreach programs.

Sophomore Mia Lopez, who helped start the initiative, shares, “We wanted to do something real and meaningful to help kids who are going through tough times. Even small things can make a big difference when you’re struggling.”

Since the project began last year, the students have made over 500 kits and inspired other schools in the area to join the effort. Their work has brought hope and comfort to many young people and sparked a wave of kindness throughout Durham.
