Hello friends!
As we step into the weekend, I want to encourage you to take a deep breath, slow down, and really notice the beauty all around you. Joy doesn’t always come from big events or grand plans—it often hides in the little things: the sound of laughter, the colors of a sunset, a favorite song on the radio, or the simple comfort of a good cup of coffee.
Whatever your plans are—spending time with loved ones, catching up on rest, or exploring something new—I hope you allow yourself to soak it all in. Let’s remind ourselves that happiness is not something we have to chase; it’s already woven into the everyday moments if we pause long enough to see it.
Wishing you a weekend filled with peace, joy, and plenty of reasons to smile. 💛
See you out there in beautiful Wake,
Diane

What’s Happening in Wake County?
Active TB Case Reported at Leesville Road High School
Wake County health officials confirmed an active tuberculosis (TB) case at Leesville Road High School in Raleigh. The county is working with Wake County Public Schools to identify and notify anyone considered a close contact.
TB spreads through the air when someone with the disease coughs or speaks but is not spread by casual contact like sharing food or passing in hallways.
Families contacted by the county will be given testing instructions. Others at the school are not considered at risk. Symptoms to watch for include a cough lasting more than three weeks, chest pain, fatigue, fever, and night sweats.
Wake County Public Health offers testing and treatment at its Sunnybrook clinic in Raleigh. While one case has been confirmed, officials emphasize that the overall risk to the broader school community remains low. Read More

130 Volunteers Help Bring the News to
North Carolina’s Blind Community
RALEIGH, N.C. — Every week, 130 dedicated volunteers across North Carolina lend their voices to help those who are visually impaired stay connected to the world. These volunteers read newspapers, magazines, and other printed materials aloud, ensuring that blind and visually impaired residents can access the same information as everyone else.
The program, run by the North Carolina Talking Book Program in partnership with local libraries and organizations, relies entirely on volunteers who record articles from local and national publications. Their efforts allow listeners to stay informed on current events, community news, and entertainment, making a significant impact on their independence and quality of life.
“Being able to hear the news, articles, and stories that others read is so important,” said one volunteer. “It’s a small effort on our part, but it makes a huge difference in someone’s life.”
North Carolina residents who are blind or visually impaired can sign up to receive these audio materials free of charge. Volunteers are also always welcome, offering flexible opportunities to help their neighbors across the state.
For more information on how to participate or volunteer, visit the North Carolina Talking Book Program’s website or contact your local library.

A Nurse's Lifesaving Act
In a remarkable display of compassion, Misty Combs, a nurse at the Letcher County Health Department in Kentucky, performed life-saving CPR on a baby raccoon that had seemingly drowned after consuming fermented peaches from a dumpster. The incident began when Combs and her colleagues noticed a distressed raccoon mother trying to rescue her two pups from the dumpster. Combs managed to retrieve one pup easily, but the second was unresponsive and submerged in water. Trusting her instincts, she began chest compressions and back pats, reviving the pup. A video of the rescue has since gone viral, capturing hearts worldwide. Despite the personal risk, Combs prioritized saving the animal. The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources later took the raccoon to a vet, who determined it was fit to be released back into the wild the next day. Combs expressed amazement at successfully reviving the animal and helping return it to nature. Read More
