What’s Happening in Wake County?

🌕 Don’t Miss the Super Harvest Moon!

Mark your calendars—on Monday, October 6, 2025, the night sky will put on a dazzling show. The Harvest Moonreaches its peak at 11:47 p.m. ET, and this year it’s extra special—it’s a Super Harvest Moon!

Why so super? Not only is it the full moon closest to the autumn equinox, but it’s also the point in the moon’s orbit when it swings nearest to Earth. That means the moon will look bigger, brighter, and more golden than usual, casting a magical glow across the night sky.

Fun fact: Harvest Moons usually appear in September, but this year’s lunar calendar shifts the honor to October. That makes this 2025 moon a rare treat!

So grab a blanket, step outside, and soak in the view—you won’t want to miss this celestial showstopper. 🌕

👻 Spooky Snacks: THC Treats Raise Halloween Concerns

As Halloween creeps closer, state leaders are warning families to keep a sharp eye on the candy bag. THC-infused snacks—some disguised in packaging that mimics popular candy brands—are turning up on the market and could easily fool an unsuspecting trick-or-treater.

Officials urge parents to give every sweet a second glance this year. Watch for misspelled labels, faded designs, or wrappers that look tampered with. While no major cases have popped up in our area, health experts remind us that even small amounts of THC can be dangerous for children.

The takeaway? Collect candy from trusted sources, double-check the treats, and when in doubt, toss it out. A safe bag of goodies makes for a truly happy Halloween. 🎃

A Mother’s Mission: Turning Heartbreak into Hope

When Lineé Walker lost her son Daniel, her world shattered. But in her grief, she found a calling. “You have to be his voice,” she said — and she’s been doing just that ever since.

Lineé founded Daniel’s Voice, a nonprofit dedicated to educating and advocating for individuals facing domestic violence. Alongside it, Daniel’s Den serves as a safe space and support group for those impacted. Together, these initiatives shine a light on an often-overlooked truth: men, too, are victims of domestic violence.

At a recent Thursday evening gathering, young men listened, shared, and reflected. “I see it every day with my family, friends, I just see it,” said participant Lahjawan Knight. For him and many others, the message was clear: “It’s not good for a man or woman to put their hands on each other.”

The statistics are sobering. According to the CDC, one in three men will experience sexual violence, physical violence, or stalking by an intimate partner in their lifetime. In North Carolina alone, state reports show that in 2023, 57 of 135 domestic violence homicide victims were men. Read More

Man Charged After Deadly Wake Forest Shooting

Wake Forest, N.C. — A 44-year-old man is facing a murder charge after a woman was fatally shot Tuesday night on Mill Dam Road, police said.

Officers responded to the 5500 block and found 40-year-old Josefina Tavarez with life-threatening injuries. She later died at the hospital.

Her boyfriend, Hariston Jose Ureña-Morales, was arrested and charged with felony murder. Investigators believe the shooting was domestic in nature.

Ureña-Morales appeared in court Wednesday, speaking through a translator, and is being held without bond until his next court date on October 22.

Police say the incident was isolated and there is no ongoing threat to the public.

The Power of Giving: Making a Difference One Meal at a Time

Every day, our students come to school ready to learn, play, and grow—but for some, a healthy meal isn’t always guaranteed. Thanks to the generosity of our parents and community members, programs like our School Meals Donations and Angel Fund help ensure that every student has access to nutritious food.

When you donate the balance of your student’s account, you’re not just contributing funds—you’re creating opportunities. Your gift directly supports other students who rely on school meals and alternative food distribution efforts, making a tangible difference in their day-to-day lives.

Giving doesn’t just help students; it strengthens our entire community. Each act of kindness sends a message that no child should go hungry and that we all have a role in caring for one another.

To join this effort, complete [this form], and choose to direct your donation toward helping other students. Every contribution, no matter the size, nourishes more than a meal—it nurtures hope, learning, and community.

Because we can all use some good news.

Running to Show Refugees They Belong

In a world that can feel divided, sometimes it takes one person—and his family—to remind us of our shared humanity.

Earlier this year, Australian humanitarian David Buxton laced up his running shoes with a mission: to prove to refugees from Iraq and Syria that they are not forgotten. His organization, You Belong, has long helped resettle families who’ve lost everything to war and displacement. But Buxton wanted to do more than offer services—he wanted to show compassion in action.

So he set out on a 100-mile run across northern Iraq, retracing the very landscapes where countless families once fled in fear. For him, every grueling step in the desert heat was a symbol—of endurance, of solidarity, of hope. “If they could walk these roads to survive,” he said, “I can run them to honor their courage.”

The run wasn’t just about him. Midway through, his 13-year-old son joined him on the trail. Side by side, father and son pushed through blistering heat, dusty roads, and exhaustion. Their journey passed through towns like Kalak, Soran, and Erbil—names etched with pain for the refugees who had walked them before. Yet this time, the footsteps carried a different message: you matter, you belong, you are not alone.

For the families who watched and followed along, Buxton’s run wasn’t simply a stunt. It was a gift of empathy, a declaration that their stories deserve to be heard—not as statistics in a report, but as human lives with dreams, dignity, and worth.

“I hope people see that compassion isn’t about grand gestures,” Buxton shared. “It’s about walking—or running—beside someone who has suffered, and reminding them that the world hasn’t turned its back.”

In the end, the miles weren’t just measured in distance. They were measured in hope, in connection, and in the promise that even in the hardest places, humanity still runs strong.

"And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up."
Galatians 6:9 (ESV)
