North Carolina State Capitol: History
Raleigh, NC – Nestled in the heart of downtown Raleigh, the North Carolina State Capitol stands as a magnificent testament to the state’s history, politics, and architectural beauty. A visit here offers a glimpse into the past, insight into government, and an opportunity to explore one of North Carolina’s most iconic landmarks.
Constructed between 1833 and 1840, the State Capitol originally served as the seat of North Carolina’s government, housing both the Legislature and the Governor’s office. It is one of the few surviving examples of Greek Revival architecture in the United States and is recognized as a National Historic Landmark. Its grand columns, stately facade, and ornate interior reflect the design trends of the 19th century and the ambitions of a young state.
The Capitol has witnessed pivotal moments in North Carolina history, including legislative decisions that shaped the state’s economy, civil rights, and infrastructure. While the Governor’s office has since moved, the building remains a centerpiece for historic tours and educational programs.
Visitors to the North Carolina State Capitol can enjoy a variety of highlights:
Rotunda and Hallways: Marvel at the detailed frescoes, period woodwork, and classical columns.
Historic Chambers: Walk through the former House and Senate chambers and imagine the debates that once took place within these walls.
Governor’s Reception Room: Explore the elegant room where past governors welcomed dignitaries and guests.
Artifacts and Exhibits: Learn about the state’s history through historical documents, portraits, and period furniture.
Statues and Monuments: The grounds feature monuments commemorating notable figures in North Carolina history.
Things to Do
Guided Tours: Knowledgeable docents offer tours that provide fascinating stories behind the building’s design and the events that took place there.
Photography: The architecture, both inside and out, provides excellent photo opportunities for history and architecture enthusiasts.
Special Events: The Capitol occasionally hosts lectures, cultural events, and educational programs for students and adults.
Nearby Attractions: After visiting, explore Moore Square, the North Carolina Museum of History, or the nearby Raleigh City Market for dining and local shopping.
The North Carolina State Capitol is more than just a government building—it is a living piece of history. Whether you are a history buff, architecture lover, student, or visitor seeking a unique experience in Raleigh, the Capitol offers a rich and immersive glimpse into North Carolina’s past. It is a place to appreciate the state’s heritage, learn about the governance that shaped it, and experience the grandeur of 19th-century architecture firsthand.

Honored with Governor’s Volunteer Service Award
A group of exceptional student volunteers from the Outer Banks are proving that age is no limit when it comes to making a difference in the community. These young leaders, serving on the Dare County Teen Court, have been recognized with the prestigious 2025 North Carolina Governor’s Volunteer Service Award.
Through their involvement with the Teen Court program, the students play an active role in promoting justice, accountability, and civic responsibility among their peers. They assist in hearings, help guide first-time offenders, and participate in programs designed to educate fellow teens on the consequences of their actions.
Their dedication goes beyond fulfilling a service requirement; it reflects a deep commitment to improving their community and supporting a fair and just system. By taking on responsibilities that significantly impact their peers, these students demonstrate leadership, integrity, and compassion.
The award highlights their outstanding contributions and serves as a reminder that young people can drive positive change. Community leaders hope their example will inspire other students across North Carolina to volunteer, engage, and make a difference in their own neighborhoods.
