The Best Burger in Wake County? You Voted
Earlier this week, we asked our readers one simple—but oh-so-important—question: Where can you find the Best Burger in Wake County?
First off, thank you to everyone who responded! Your recommendations were not only helpful, but downright mouthwatering. Words like juicy, delicious, perfectly grilled, and flat-out amazing came pouring in to describe your favorite burgers—and let’s be honest, is there anything more American than a good burger?
After tallying up the tasty responses, two burger joints rose to the top:
🥇 The Real McCoy took first place with readers raving about their classic flavor, fresh ingredients, and bold combinations.
🥈 Gatehouse Tavern came in hot on its heels, with several of you declaring their burgers the “best-kept secret in town.”
🥉 In third place? The beloved cheeseburger at Carolina Ale House—a solid classic that keeps burger lovers coming back for more.
I’ve personally tried all three (yes, it was a tough job—but someone had to do it 😄), and I couldn’t agree more: these spots know how to craft a crave-worthy burger.
So there you have it—Wake County’s burger royalty, as chosen by you, our readers! If you haven’t already, give these places a try and let your taste buds be the judge. 🍔✨

📍 North Carolina Triva 📍
Did you know? The North Carolina State Capitol, completed in 1840, is one of the best-preserved examples of Greek Revival architecture in the United States. It’s built from locally quarried granite and originally housed not only the governor’s office but also all three branches of state government—legislative, executive, and judicial—all under one roof!

How Raleigh Got Its Name
Nestled in the heart of North Carolina’s Piedmont region, Raleigh didn’t spring up by accident. It was a city designed with purpose—a planned capital, born from politics, ambition, and a nod to England’s bold age of exploration. But how exactly did Raleigh get its name? The answer goes back to the late 18th century and even further to a man who never set foot on the land he would symbolically come to represent.
After the American Revolution, North Carolina’s leaders faced a practical dilemma: their state government was on the move too often. For decades, the colonial and early state capitals had bounced between towns like Edenton, Bath, New Bern, and Fayetteville. None of these were centrally located, making it difficult for citizens across the growing state to access the government. By the 1780s, it became clear that North Carolina needed a permanent, central capital.
In 1788, the North Carolina General Assembly appointed a committee to find a site no more than 10 miles from Isaac Hunter’s Tavern, a well-known watering hole along a trade route in Wake County. The spot they selected—forested and undeveloped—was purchased from a man named Joel Lane, often referred to as the “Father of Raleigh.”
Raleigh was officially established in 1792. Unlike most American cities of the time, it wasn’t built around a port, river, or trade center—it was planned entirely for the purpose of government. The city’s original layout was designed by William Christmas, who envisioned a grid pattern centered around a large public square, today’s Capitol Square.
In choosing a name, North Carolina’s leaders wanted something that reflected the state’s historical roots and values. They landed on Sir Walter Raleigh, the English explorer, courtier, and poet who, under Queen Elizabeth I, had helped lead England’s first efforts to colonize the New World.
Sir Walter Raleigh was most famously connected to the ill-fated "Lost Colony" of Roanoke Island, established in the 1580s off the North Carolina coast. Though the colony mysteriously disappeared, Raleigh’s legacy as a visionary (and as a symbol of English exploration and ambition) endured. Naming the new capital after him paid homage to that legacy—even though Sir Walter never visited North Carolina himself.
Raleigh holds the distinction of being one of the few U.S. cities planned and established specifically as a state capital. Its origins are rooted in unity and accessibility, not commerce. As North Carolina grew, so did Raleigh—from a small, sleepy government hub to a thriving center of education, innovation, and culture.
Today, reminders of Sir Walter Raleigh can be seen throughout the city that bears his name: from statues and murals to the seal of the City of Raleigh, which features his image and ships. The city remains a living tribute to exploration, bold planning, and the spirit of new beginnings.

One Diaper at a Time!
In the heart of Wake County, Diaper Train, a program of Saint Saviour’s Center in Raleigh, is making a profound impact—one diaper at a time. Since 2011, Diaper Train has provided over 7 million free diapers, wipes, and books to local families in need. These essential items, often overlooked by public assistance programs like SNAP and WIC, are crucial for keeping babies healthy and parents working or in school. Without access to diapers, many parents are forced to miss work or turn to unsafe alternatives for their children.
Diaper Train serves as a vital support system for Wake County families, offering more than just supplies—it offers hope and dignity. One local mother shared, “Thanks to Diaper Train, I can afford groceries this week. It’s not just about diapers—it’s about breathing room.” This kind of support is made possible entirely through the generosity of the community.
There are many ways to help. A donation of just $25 provides a one-month supply of diapers for a child. Volunteers are always welcome to help pack and distribute supplies. Individuals, companies, and community groups can host diaper drives to collect much-needed items. Spreading awareness about diaper need is also a powerful way to contribute.
To donate, volunteer, or learn more about this heartwarming mission, visit www.diapertrain.org. With your help, Diaper Train is changing lives—one diaper at a time.

Heroic Rescue: How a Dog Saved His Owner in Durham, NC
On a cold December evening in Durham, North Carolina, in December 2022, a remarkable story of loyalty and bravery unfolded that touched the hearts of many.
Max, a German Shepherd mix, belonged to local resident Sarah Thompson. One night, Sarah suffered a severe medical emergency—a diabetic seizure—while she was alone at home. Max immediately sensed that something was wrong. Instead of panicking, Max sprang into action.
Max ran outside barking loudly to alert neighbors, then led them directly back to Sarah’s side. Thanks to Max’s quick thinking and determination, emergency responders arrived promptly and were able to provide Sarah with life-saving care.
Sarah credits Max for saving her life. “He didn’t leave my side and made sure help came fast,” she shared. Max’s heroic actions show the incredible bond between humans and their pets—and how animals can be true guardians and friends.
This story from Durham is a beautiful reminder of the profound ways animals can impact our lives, often when we need them the most.
"And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up."
