🥛 Did you know?
The loblolly pine (Pinus taeda) is the most common pine tree in North Carolina and holds great commercial importance. Known for its fast growth and remarkable adaptability, it thrives across a variety of soil types found in the coastal plains and piedmont regions. This towering tree can reach heights of over 100 feet and live for up to 200 years. Historically, its strong, straight wood has been essential to North Carolina’s economy, providing lumber, paper, and naval stores such as tar and turpentine since colonial times. The name “loblolly” originates from an old English term meaning “muddy or swampy place,” which aptly reflects the tree’s natural preference for wet, lowland habitats.

Moon Shire History
North Carolina’s rich moonshine heritage is more than just history—it’s a vibrant experience waiting to be discovered. Nestled in scenic foothills and charming small towns, the state’s moonshine distilleries offer visitors a unique blend of tradition, craftsmanship, and Southern hospitality. These distilleries provide a window into the past, where family recipes and time-honored techniques have been passed down through generations, surviving Prohibition and evolving into today’s craft spirits. Whether you’re drawn to the classic white lightning or intrigued by creative flavors like apple pie, salted caramel, or coffee-infused moonshine, there’s something to delight every palate.
Notable stops include Call Family Distillers in Wilkesboro, known for its authentic recipes and rustic charm; Broadslab Distillery in Benson, which offers a “dirt-to-bottle” farm experience highlighting local grains; Copper Barrel Distillery in North Wilkesboro, a cozy small-batch producer with a welcoming atmosphere; and Cedar Mountain Moonshine, surrounded by breathtaking mountain views and famed for its bold, high-proof spirits and unique infusions like the “Rise N’ Shine” espresso blend.
Throughout the year, these distilleries host special events that add extra flavor to your visit. The Wilkes County Moonshine Festival in September brings lively bluegrass music, tastings, and local vendors, celebrating the area’s distilling heritage. In October, Broadslab’s Harvest Festival highlights farm-to-table pairings and seasonal spirit releases. Copper Barrel’s December Holiday Open House offers festive treats, limited-edition samples, and unique gifts. Cedar Mountain Moonshine’s spring and summer live music nights combine spirited tastings with local musicians, creating an unforgettable atmosphere.
Visiting these moonshine distilleries is about more than sampling spirits—it’s about connecting with the stories, traditions, and people that make North Carolina’s culture so special. Whether you’re a seasoned connoisseur or just curious, the blend of warm hospitality and handcrafted moonshine will make your trip truly memorable. Most distilleries welcome visitors year-round with tours, tastings, and special events, but it’s a good idea to check their websites or call ahead for the latest hours and reservation policies.
