Hello friends!

Hope you're cruising through your week with a smile 😊 — and speaking of cruising… today is National Drive-Thru Day!

That’s right — we’re tipping our hats to the classic American convenience that lets us grab a burger, taco, coffee, or milkshake without ever leaving the driver’s seat. Believe it or not, the very first drive-thru window dates all the way back to 1947, when Red’s Giant Hamburg in Springfield, Missouri opened the window to what would become a fast food revolution.

Since then, drive-thrus have become part of our everyday lives — from late-night snack runs to early morning coffee pickups (in pajamas, no judgment!).

To celebrate, some of your favorite spots are offering tasty deals today, July 24:

🍔 Burger King – Royal Perks members get double Crowns on drive-thru purchases!
🥤 SonicHalf-price drinks all day via their app — not just during happy hour!
🌮 Del Taco – 20% off all app orders through July 30
🍝 Fazoli’s – BOGO spaghetti deal with code BOGO25 (app/online)
🍩 Dunkin’ – 150 bonus points when you order through the app at the drive-thru
🍗 Jack in the Box – Free Jr. Jumbo Jack or Jr. Chicken Sandwich with $5+ app purchase
🥤 Carl’s Jr. – Half-priced shakes, drinks, and sides from 2–5 pm & 8 pm–midnight
Scooter’s Coffee – $2 off “Caramelicious” drinks + free stickers for early birds

So go ahead — treat yourself to a drive-thru classic. Whether it’s your favorite fries, a frosty shake, or just the joy of not leaving the car, there’s something worth celebrating today.

Let us know what your go-to drive-thru order is — or share a nostalgic memory of piling into the car with family for a late-night fast food run. We’d love to hear it!

You may need to have the ap for the restaurants mentioned to get the deals!

See you out there in beautiful Wake,
Diane

Hardee’s: From a Small North Carolina Burger Stand to a National Fast Food Icon

Hardee’s story begins right here in North Carolina, where a simple but innovative idea helped shape the fast food industry. It all started in September 1960, when Wilber Hardee, a native of Martin County, opened the very first Hardee’s restaurant in Greenville, NC.

Wilber Hardee was no stranger to the restaurant business—he had run several small eateries before deciding to launch a new concept focused on quick service, quality burgers, and friendly hospitality. His Greenville location introduced what was then a novel feature for the time: a drive-thru window, allowing customers to order and receive their meals without leaving their cars. This convenience, combined with the distinctive char-grilled burgers, made Hardee’s a hit locally.

The success of the original Hardee’s in Greenville soon inspired expansion. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, Hardee’s grew steadily, opening new locations across North Carolina and neighboring states. The chain became known for its signature thick, juicy burgers and golden fries, carving out a niche as a Southern fast-food favorite.

By the mid-1980s, Hardee’s had grown to become the fourth largest burger chain in the United States, with hundreds of restaurants nationwide. Its rapid expansion was fueled by a mix of franchising and corporate-owned outlets, and the brand’s distinctive logo—a smiling star—became a familiar sight along highways and city streets.

Though now part of CKE Restaurants Holdings, Inc. (which also owns Carl’s Jr.), Hardee’s maintains strong roots in North Carolina. Several locations still operate throughout the state, serving up classic menu items as well as newer innovations to appeal to modern tastes.

The original Greenville location may no longer exist in its original form, but the spirit of Hardee’s pioneering drive-thru service and commitment to quality endures. Hardee’s continues to be a beloved part of North Carolina’s fast-food landscape, blending tradition with contemporary fast-casual trends.

Fun Fact: Hardee’s was one of the first fast-food chains to introduce breakfast sandwiches and biscuits, a Southern influence that has helped define the morning menu for generations.

Next time you pull up to a Hardee’s drive-thru, remember that you’re part of a fast-food legacy that started right here in North Carolina with a simple idea and a passion for great burgers on the go.

🐾❤️ The Dog Who Delivered Dinner

In early 2023, a pizza delivery driver named Tyler Morgan was finishing his shift in a quiet neighborhood near Winston-Salem, NC. As he walked a large pepperoni pizza to the front porch, he noticed something odd: a Golden Retriever pacing nervously by a parked car, barking but not aggressively—almost like it was trying to say something.

Instead of ignoring the dog, Tyler knelt down and saw a note hanging from the pup’s collar:
📝 “My name is Daisy. My owner has fallen. Please help.”

Startled, Tyler followed Daisy as she took off at a steady trot, leading him two doors down and into the backyard. There, lying on the deck, was an elderly woman named Ms. Evelyn, semi-conscious after collapsing while gardening.

Tyler called 911 and stayed with her until help arrived. EMTs said Daisy’s quick action—and Tyler’s response—likely saved her life.

Later, it was revealed that Evelyn, a retired teacher, had trained Daisy using cues from service dog videos, just in case. She never imagined it would actually work.

The local animal shelter honored Daisy with a special “Canine Hero Award,” and Tyler was featured in a local news piece called “Everyday Angels.”

Social Security Is Not Going Away

When people hear that Social Security is “running out of money,” it understandably causes concern. Many imagine their monthly checks suddenly vanishing—but thankfully, that’s not what’s happening.

The truth is: Social Security isn’t going bankrupt. The program is funded by payroll taxes from current workers, which means there will still be money coming in even if the trust fund reserves are depleted (currently projected for the mid-2030s). What would change is how much the program could pay out—if no action is taken, benefits may be reduced by about 20–25%, not eliminated.

In other words, checks will still come, but they may be smaller unless Congress takes steps to shore up the system. Options include raising the payroll tax cap, adjusting benefit formulas, or changing the retirement age.

Bottom line: Social Security isn’t disappearing, but it does need some repairs to keep it strong for future generations. Read More
