NC Department of Agriculture Fines Wake County Animal Center

The North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services has issued a civil penalty against the Wake County Animal Center, citing multiple alleged violations of state animal welfare regulations. The Veterinary Division alleges the shelter failed to properly maintain its facility, house animals safely, and follow required protocols — prompting the fine. The case is currently under review, and Wake County has been given the option to contest the assessment.

Father Charged After Fatal Shooting in Zebulon

ZEBULON, N.C. — A tragic incident unfolded Wednesday night on the 2100 block of Taramar Lane, where a father was taken into custody following a fatal shooting at a private residence.

According to court records, 59-year-old Andrew David Torry has been charged with murder in the death of his adult son. Zebulon Police responded to the scene after reports of a disturbance and quickly secured the area. Torry was arrested and remains in Wake County custody as the investigation continues.

Authorities have not released additional details, but more information is expected as the case develops. Read More

High Fire Danger

North Carolina is experiencing unusually high fire danger due to a combination of persistent drought, very dry vegetation, and low humidity that makes forests and grasses more flammable. Gusty winds are helping any spark spread quickly, adding to the risk. In many areas, leftover storm debris from Hurricane Helene has also created extra fuel on the ground, making fires harder to control. These conditions together have led to increased wildfire activity and prompted burn restrictions across much of the state. Read More

Recognition That Humanity Prevails

Though this is slightly more high-level than an individual story, it radiates the same mantra: people helping people. The city of Asheville, North Carolina was recently named America’s “Nicest Place” for 2025 by Reader’s Digest — not because of its mountains or culture (though they are lovely) but primarily for how its community came together in the wake of Hurricane Helene. Grass-roots relief efforts, volunteers helping neighbors, and collective resilience earned the recognition.

The honor stands as a reminder: sometimes kindness is not just a singular act but a community’s shared identity.
Key takeaway: Kindness can be a characteristic of a place, not just of a person — and that uplifts everyone.

"And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up."
