Hello friends!
On this day in 1800, America moved its capital to Washington, D.C.
A humid swamp with exactly zero completed buildings and a White House that was basically a Lego set missing half the pieces.
Congress showed up, slapped a mosquito, and went, “Perfect. This is where we’ll argue for the next 224 years.”
See you out there in beautiful Wake,
Diane

This Week’s Feature-North Carolina for the Holidays!
Skip the Mall, Pet an Alpaca: Christmas Market at Koren Farms Is Peak Cozy Chaos (Dec 13)
Mocksville is about to smell like cinnamon, woodsmoke, and questionable life choices, because Koren Farms Christmas Market is back on Saturday, December 13, 2025, and it’s basically the holiday party your Pinterest board wishes it could be.
Imagine this: You roll up to a rolling pasture lit up like the North Pole crashed into a Southern farm. Fire pits are roaring, craft beer and hot spiced cider are flowing (yes, you can spike the cider harder than your uncle’s eggnog), and somewhere in the distance an alpaca named Kevin is judging your ugly sweater.
While the kids lose their minds petting the fluffiest alpaca squad this side of Peru, you’re free to shop 50+ local vendors slinging leather earrings, handmade soaps that smell like a lumberjack’s dream, wooden signs that say “Bless This Hot Mess,” and enough candles to burn down the North Pole twice. Food trucks are parked like delicious little reindeer: think loaded mac-n-cheese bowls, wood-fired pizza, and kettle corn that ruins popcorn for you forever.
Live music? Check. Santa wandering around like he owns the pasture? Double check. A Christmas tree lot where you can cut your own or just pretend you’re rugged while sipping a peppermint porter? Triple check.
Gates open 12–7 p.m., admission is free, parking is free, and good vibes are aggressively enforced. Bring a wagon for your haul, a blanket for fire-pit squatting, and zero dignity (because you will take 47 selfies with alpacas and nobody’s stopping you).
Koren Farms Christmas Market isn’t just an event; it’s where you accidentally adopt an alpaca obsession and go home with a trunk full of local loot and marshmallow on your coat. December 13 only—come get weirdly wholesome with us. 🎄🦙🔥

A Burning Car, a Stranger With a Shovel, & a Life Saved
Along a rural stretch near Spruce Mountain in Raleigh County, West Virginia, Rebecca “Becki” Morgan lost control of her vehicle and crashed into an embankment. The car caught fire with her still inside. Witnesses froze in terror — but one man, William “Bill” Clay, didn’t hesitate.
Clay grabbed the only tools he had: a fire extinguisher from his truck and a heavy shovel. Smoke burned his eyes as he fought the flames, beating them back long enough to force open the door. Becki was conscious but disoriented and trapped by the crushed metal. Clay reached in, pulled, and didn’t stop until he had her clear. Moments later, the car erupted into full flames. Local firefighters called the rescue “nothing short of heroic.” Becki, recovering in the hospital, said she will never forget the stranger who showed up at the worst moment of her life and refused to leave her behind.
"And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up."
