Getting to Know Wake County
Joel Lane Museum House
If you’ve ever wondered what life was like in Wake County more than 250 years ago, the Joel Lane Museum House is the perfect place to find out. Tucked away in Raleigh, this beautifully preserved home is often called the “Birthplace of Raleigh”—and for good reason.
Built around 1769, the Joel Lane House is the oldest surviving home in Wake County. Joel Lane wasn’t just a homeowner—he was a leader, a planter, a Revolutionary War patriot, and the man who sold the land that became Raleigh. Stepping through his front door is like stepping into the 18th century, complete with period furnishings, costumed guides, and fascinating stories about the people who shaped our community.
In 1771, Joel Lane hosted key meetings that led to the creation of Wake County. Then, in 1792, he sold 1,000 acres to the state for the new capital city. His home was a gathering place for leaders, neighbors, and visitors—a hub of early North Carolina life. Today, it stands as a rare example of Georgian architecture in our area, carefully restored so you can see it much as it was in his day.
The museum is open Wednesday–Saturday with guided tours at 10:30 a.m., 12:00 p.m., and 1:30 p.m. Spring brings colorful blossoms to the colonial gardens, while autumn offers crisp air and vibrant leaves—both perfect backdrops for a visit.
What You’ll Experience

Quick TCEO Saves a Life on Live TV
Sometimes heroes wear suits instead of capes. On July 31, during a live segment at New York City’s Pix11 studio, grocery store CEO Stew Leonard Jr. was chatting on-air when he noticed studio engineer Kurt Bennett choking on a piece of steak. Without hesitation, Leonard jumped into action, performing the Heimlich maneuver and saving Bennett’s life right there in the studio.
Leonard credits his quick response to years of safety training—something his family promotes through their Stewie the Duck Swim School, which teaches water safety to children.
In recognition of his life-saving act, Mayor Eric Adams proclaimed the day “Stew Leonard Jr. Day” in New York City. Bennett calls Leonard his hero, and the story has touched countless hearts, proving that kindness and preparedness can change the outcome of a life in just seconds.
Takeaway: We never know when we might have the chance to step up. A little training and a lot of heart can make you someone’s hero.
"And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up."
