Dig for Hidden Treasures 💎
Think you have to travel out West to strike it rich? Think again! North Carolina is one of the best places in the country to hunt for real gemstones. Whether you're planning a family road trip, a weekend getaway, or simply looking for a unique adventure, the Tar Heel State is home to sparkling treasures just waiting to be discovered.
From emeralds and rubies to sapphires and aquamarines, these destinations let visitors experience the thrill of finding genuine gems—and yes, you get to keep what you find!
Nestled in the heart of the Great Smoky Mountains, Franklin has earned its reputation as the "Gem Capital of the World." For generations, families have traveled here with buckets, screens, and a little luck, hoping to uncover colorful treasures hidden beneath the mountain soil.
Visitors can search for Rubies, Sapphires, Garnets, and Rutile.
Unlike many tourist attractions, several local mines allow you to sift through natural, unsalted mountain dirt, giving you an authentic gemstone hunting experience. Popular destinations include Rose Creek Mine, Sheffield Mine, and Mason's Gem Mine, where every bucket could reveal your next prized keepsake.
Located about 90 minutes southwest of Asheville, Franklin also offers scenic mountain views, charming shops, and plenty of Southern hospitality, making it an ideal weekend escape.
Just northwest of Statesville sits one of North Carolina's best-kept secrets. Hiddenite is famous for producing brilliant emeralds and a rare green gemstone so unique it was named after the town itself—Hiddenite.
The area's crown jewel is Emerald Hollow Mine, the only emerald mine in the world open to the public for amateur prospecting. Visitors can search creek beds, dig in designated mining areas, or purchase buckets of ore to sift through.
You might discover, Emeralds, Aquamarines, Sapphires, and Hiddenite.
Located only about 2½ hours from Wake County, it's one of the easiest day trips for anyone wanting a genuine gemstone adventure.
Deep in North Carolina's beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains lies Spruce Pine, affectionately known as "The Mineral City." While the area has long been famous for its feldspar and mica mines, it's also known for producing spectacular quartz crystals and aquamarines.
One of the area's most popular attractions is Emerald Village, where visitors can explore a collection of historic mines, enjoy underground tours, pan for gemstones, and learn about the fascinating geology that made this region famous worldwide.
It's an adventure that's equal parts history, science, and treasure hunt.
If gold fever sounds more exciting than gemstones, North Carolina has you covered there too.
The historic Reed Gold Mine in Cabarrus County is the site of America's first documented gold discovery. Visitors can tour the underground mine, explore the museum, and even try their hand at panning for gold—just like prospectors did over 200 years ago.
Whether you're searching for sparkling emeralds, brilliant rubies, or flakes of real gold, North Carolina offers unforgettable adventures for explorers of every age. Pack comfortable clothes, bring your sense of adventure, and prepare to get a little dirty—you never know what hidden treasure might be waiting beneath your next scoop of dirt.
After all, the best souvenir isn't something you buy...it's something you discover yourself.

This Fourth of July isn't just another Independence Day—it's America's 250th birthday, making this year's celebration one for the history books. The best part? You don't have to travel far to experience an unforgettable holiday. From small-town parades and patriotic festivals to food trucks, live music, and dazzling fireworks, Wake County has everything you need for the perfect hometown celebration.
Start your Independence Day bright and early by soaking up a classic American tradition at the Wake Forest Children's Parade on Saturday, July 4, beginning at 10:00 a.m. in Downtown Wake Forest. Decorated wagons, bicycles, scooters, and smiling families fill the streets, creating the kind of small-town charm that brings back memories of simpler times. It's the perfect way to kick off a day of patriotic fun.
If you prefer a larger celebration, head to downtown Raleigh for the First in Freedom Parade at 11:00 a.m. along Fayetteville Street. Bands, colorful floats, community organizations, and patriotic displays celebrate both our nation's history and North Carolina's important role in America's story. It's a lively event that captures the excitement of Independence Day.
After the parades, continue the celebration at the Capitol 250: NC Freedom Fest, taking place from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on the grounds of the North Carolina State Capitol in Raleigh. Created to honor America's 250th anniversary, this special event features historical demonstrations, family activities, educational exhibits, live entertainment, and plenty of opportunities to celebrate the nation's rich heritage.
Looking for a relaxed hometown atmosphere? Spend the afternoon at the Rolesville 4th Celebration, held from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Redford Place Park in Rolesville. Families can enjoy food trucks, local vendors, lawn games, children's activities, and live entertainment while waiting for the evening festivities to begin. It's the perfect gathering for neighbors, friends, and visitors looking to celebrate together.
As the sun sets, it's time for the grand finale—fireworks!
The Apex Fireworks Frenzy begins with evening festivities at Hunter Street Park in Apex, with fireworks lighting up the sky at approximately 9:15 p.m. Bring a blanket or lawn chair, enjoy the festive atmosphere, and watch one of Wake County's most popular fireworks displays.
Or head north to the Wake Forest Fireworks Spectacular, held at Heritage High School's Husky Stadium. Gates open during the evening, with the fireworks show beginning around 9:30 p.m. Families gather on the field to enjoy music, community spirit, and a breathtaking fireworks display that perfectly caps off the holiday.
Whether your perfect Fourth includes waving flags along a parade route, exploring history at the State Capitol, enjoying local food and family fun, or ending the evening beneath a sky filled with red, white, and blue fireworks, Wake County offers countless ways to celebrate close to home.
This year, as America turns 250, celebrate where memories are made—with family, friends, neighbors, and the timeless traditions that make Independence Day one of our nation's most cherished holidays.
