🌊 Escape to Beaufort, North Carolina’s Hidden Coastal Gem

Looking for the perfect seaside escape that’s big on charm and light on crowds? Pack your bags and point your compass toward Beaufort, North Carolina—a historic harbor town where time slows down and the beauty of the coast truly shines.

Nestled along the Crystal Coast, Beaufort (pronounced BOH-furt) is North Carolina’s third-oldest town, founded in 1709. Its storybook setting—complete with white picket fences, tree-lined streets, and waterfront boardwalks—makes it feel like you’ve stepped back in time. Yet, this little town is full of life, adventure, and beauty just waiting to be discovered.

Stroll through the Beaufort Historic Site, where centuries-old homes and costumed interpreters bring the past to life. Learn about pirate history at the North Carolina Maritime Museum, where artifacts from Blackbeard’s ship, the Queen Anne’s Revenge, are on display. Blackbeard himself spent time here in the early 1700s, and the town has held onto its seafaring legacy ever since.

One of Beaufort’s most breathtaking features is its proximity to Shackleford Banks, part of the Cape Lookout National Seashore. Just a short boat ride away, you’ll find pristine beaches and wild horses roaming freely—descendants of Spanish mustangs from centuries ago. Bring a picnic, go shelling, or simply sit in awe of the untouched beauty.

Don’t miss a ferry ride to Cape Lookout Lighthouse, famous for its black-and-white diamond pattern and incredible panoramic views at the top.

Beaufort is incredibly walkable and bike-friendly. Rent a beach cruiser and pedal your way through charming neighborhoods or along the waterfront. Stop by Front Street for unique boutiques, galleries, and cozy cafés.

Fresh seafood is on every menu—don’t leave without trying the shrimp and grits or a fresh crab cake with a view of the harbor. In the evenings, you’ll often find live music playing as boats sway in the gentle breeze.

Whether you’re kayaking through quiet inlets, sailing into the sunset, or casting a line into the Intracoastal Waterway, Beaufort blends serenity and adventure perfectly. It’s the kind of place where you can watch the sunrise with your coffee and be on a boat by lunch.

Identical Twins Celebrate 100th Birthday in Raleigh

RALEIGH, N.C. — Identical twins Mary and Margaret Harper celebrated their 100th birthday surrounded by family, friends, and decades of memories at a joyful party in Raleigh.

Born on June 22, 1925, the sisters have spent their lives side by side — from growing up during the Great Depression to serving as nurses in World War II.

“We never imagined we’d be here at 100 — together,” said Mary. “It’s sheer joy.”

The celebration included music from their youth, a giant cake, and an official proclamation from the mayor declaring June 22 “Harper Twins Day.”

Goats Complete Cleanup at Dix Park Hill

A team of 32 goats has wrapped up a 10-day job clearing overgrown brush on a steep hill at Dix Park.

Extreme Heat Watch in Effect Tuesday for Central North Carolina

RALEIGH, N.C. — Central North Carolina is under an Extreme Heat Watch starting Tuesday, June 24, as temperatures are expected to soar past 100°F, with heat index values reaching as high as 110–112°F.

Forecasters warn this level of heat and humidity poses a serious risk of heat-related illnesses. Outdoor activities should be limited, especially during the hottest part of the day, from noon to 6 p.m.

A recent salmonella outbreak has led to recalls of tomatoes and cucumbers sold in North Carolina and nearby states.

Tomatoes from Williams Farms (lot codes R4467 and R4470) sold in late April are linked to contamination. Cucumbers from Bedner Growers sold in April and May are also affected.

Health officials urge consumers to discard these items and clean any surfaces they contacted. Symptoms include diarrhea, fever, and cramps. Anyone feeling sick after eating these products should seek medical care.

First Library

Rolesville will get its first library thanks to a $142 million bond approval, marking a key step in the town’s continued growth and development.

🏔️ Heartbeats at the Top of the World: How One Man Saved Lives on Everest—Before Anyone Knew They'd Need Saving

Most people dream of reaching the top of Mount Everest for the thrill of the climb. But 62-year-old David Sullivan had a different mission in mind: saving lives.

This spring, instead of scaling the summit, David hiked to Everest Base Camp with a backpack full of hope—and one powerful device: a defibrillator. As part of his nonprofit, Code Blue CPR, he installed what is now the highest-altitude defibrillator in the world.

And just three weeks later, that life-saving tool was put to the ultimate test.

A fellow climber suddenly collapsed from cardiac arrest. Thanks to David’s foresight, the defibrillator was right there—and within minutes, other trekkers were able to restart the climber’s heart. Emergency help in the Himalayas is hours away. But because of one man’s vision and action, a life was saved before it was too late.

David didn’t climb Everest for glory. He climbed it to leave something behind that could make a difference. And it did.

His story is a beautiful reminder that you don’t need to be famous or flashy to be a hero. Sometimes, changing a life—or even saving one—starts with one good idea and the courage to act on it.

You don’t have to go to Everest to make an impact. A simple act of kindness, a thoughtful donation, or just showing up for someone in need can mean the world. 🌍💕

"And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up."
