Why don’t clams ever share their pearls?
Because they’re a little shellfish! 🐚😄
📍 North Carolina Triva 📍
Happy National Clam Day! Clams can live for decades!
Some North Carolina clams live more than 30 years in the wild, growing slowly in sandy or muddy bottoms.

Get Your Feet Wet: Clamming Adventures in North Carolina (and Where to Eat Them in Wake County!)
If you're looking for a salty, sandy, and downright fun summer adventure, clamming in North Carolina should be at the top of your list. Whether you're a seasoned shellfish seeker or just looking for a new way to enjoy the coast, North Carolina offers year-round opportunities to dig for delicious hard clams—also known as quahogs—along its beautiful sounds and inlets.
Clamming is legal and open year-round in approved areas, and you don’t even need a license to do it recreationally. You’re allowed to take home up to 100 clams per person per day (just make sure they’re at least one inch thick). The best months to go? June through August, when the tide is low and the weather is warm.
So, where should you go? Some of the best clamming spots in the state include the shoals of Pamlico Sound, the calm waters of Bogue Sound near Atlantic Beach and Emerald Isle, and the flats around Beaufort and Harkers Island. You can dig with your hands, use a small rake, or even do it the old-fashioned way—by feeling them with your toes in the mud. Look for tiny keyhole-shaped holes or "spouts" in the sand as telltale signs a clam is hiding just beneath the surface.
Once you've had your fill of digging (and maybe got a bit muddy!), you might wonder where you can enjoy professionally prepared clams closer to home. Good news—Wake County has several standout spots where clam lovers can get their fix without the sand between their toes.
If you’re in Raleigh, Saltwater Seafood & Fry Shack is a local favorite for fried clam strips and fresh seafood plates. Over in Cary, Cape Fear Seafood Company serves up classy seafood dishes, including clam-packed chowders and pasta. For a laid-back coastal vibe in landlocked territory, head to Nantucket Grill in Durham or Raleigh, where New England-style fried clams and creamy clam chowder hit the spot.
So whether you're hunting clams on the coast or craving them here in Wake County, there’s no better time to celebrate North Carolina’s rich seafood heritage. Happy clamming!

Volunteers Bring Hope and Homes Back to Life
When tough times hit, North Carolinians roll up their sleeves and help each other—and a recent example out of Asheville proves just how strong that spirit really is.
After Hurricane Helene tore through parts of Western North Carolina, the damage left behind was heartbreaking. Homes were flooded, a local community center was destroyed, and families were left without the places they rely on most. But rather than give up, the community rallied.
More than 300 volunteers came together to help rebuild not just houses, but hope. Groups like The Home Depot Foundation, Appalachia Service Project, and Asheville Buncombe Community Christian Ministry teamed up with everyday people—veterans, students, and neighbors—who donated their time and energy. They rebuilt homes, installed kitchen appliances, painted walls, and even framed new structures for families starting over.
One volunteer shared, “We’re not just building buildings—we’re helping people rebuild their lives.” And that’s exactly what they did.
Meanwhile, another heartwarming comeback happened just down the road at Chimney Rock State Park, a beloved North Carolina landmark that had to close for nearly nine months due to storm damage. Thanks to dedicated crews and a strong community effort, the park recently reopened—welcomed with smiles, cheers, and a renewed sense of pride. It wasn’t just about the scenic views; it was about bringing life and tourism back to nearby towns that depend on it.
In both cases, the message was clear: North Carolina is more than a state—it’s a family. When one part hurts, the rest of us show up. Whether it's hammering nails, offering a hot meal, or just sharing a word of encouragement, these everyday heroes remind us that kindness is alive and well right here at home.
"And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up."
— Galatians 6:9 (ESV)
