The Great Smoky Mountains National Park

North Carolina’s Most-Loved Escape

If you’ve ever felt the call of the mountains, you’re not alone! The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is not only the most-visited national park in the U.S. 🇺🇸—it’s also one of the most breathtaking spots in North Carolina. Whether you're planning a weekend adventure or dreaming about a peaceful getaway, here's why this magical place belongs on your must-visit list.

Long before it was a park, the Smokies were home to Indigenous peoples, especially the Cherokee Nation . You can still feel their connection to the land in places like Cherokee, NC. Fast forward to the 1930s, and locals, conservationists, and even President Franklin D. Roosevelt helped turn this cherished region into a protected park in 1934. Today, it's recognized globally as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Skip the crowds in Tennessee and head to North Carolina’s quieter, equally stunning side:

  • 🏡 Oconaluftee Visitor Center – Start here for maps, tips, and the Mountain Farm Museum with historic cabins and barns.

  • 🌄 Clingmans Dome – The highest peak in the park with views that stretch across 7 states on a clear day.

  • 💦 Deep Creek (near Bryson City) – Hike to waterfalls, float on an inner tube, or enjoy a relaxing picnic.

  • 🦌 Cataloochee Valley – A hidden gem where elk roam freely and old homesteads whisper stories of the past.

No matter your pace or preference, the Smokies deliver:

  • 🥾 Hiking – Choose from 800+ miles of trails, from easy walks to day-long treks.

  • 🐻 Wildlife Watching – Spot black bears, deer, turkeys, and even fireflies that blink in sync!

  • 🌊 Waterfalls – Don’t miss Juney Whank Falls, Tom Branch Falls, and the towering Mingo Falls just outside the park.

  • 🎣 Fishing, camping, horseback riding – Plenty of ways to make it your kind of adventure.

There's something about the Smokies that keeps calling people home. Maybe it’s the rolling mist, the scent of fresh pine, or the way the sunrise kisses the peaks. Whatever it is, more than 12 million visitors return each year for a reason—yet it still offers moments of quiet, solitude, and wonder.

📅 Best Times to Visit

  • 🌸 Spring (April–May) – Wildflowers bloom and waterfalls rush.

  • ☀️ Summer (June–August) – Family fun and warm weather adventures.

  • 🍁 Fall (September–October) – Stunning fall colors you won’t believe are real.

  • ❄️ Winter (Dec–Feb) – Peaceful, snow-dusted trails and fewer crowds.

From misty mountains to clear mountain streams, the Great Smoky Mountains National Park offers something for everyone. It’s beautiful, it’s wild, it’s historic—and it’s ours to enjoy. So grab your hiking boots (or just your sense of wonder), and see why this park is truly the crown jewel of North Carolina.

Quality of Life Affects the Saleability of Your Home

Wake County Continues to Shine as a Top Choice for Buyers

When buyers go house hunting, they’re not just looking at square footage, countertops, or school districts. They’re buying into the lifestyle of the area—and that’s where Wake County has a major advantage. Whether you’re thinking about selling your home or just want to feel proud of where you live, understanding what makes Wake County so desirable can help you appreciate the hidden value in your property.

Wake County ranks among the healthiest counties in North Carolina, and that’s a strong selling point for buyers who want to invest in long-term well-being. With an average life expectancy above 80 years and widespread access to quality healthcare, residents here enjoy not just longer lives—but better ones. That kind of data speaks volumes to potential buyers looking for a community that supports active, healthy living.

The strength of a local school system is one of the first things families consider when moving. Wake County Public Schools serve nearly 160,000 students and are known across the state for academic excellence, innovation, and diversity. Even if you don’t have school-aged children, strong schools boost property values across the board—and that’s good news if you’re thinking about selling.

With a thriving economy and a diverse job market that spans tech, healthcare, education, and public service, Wake County remains a magnet for skilled workers. High employment and competitive wages help create a stable housing market, which in turn keeps buyer interest high. People are drawn to areas where they know opportunities are growing.

Compared to many metro areas in the U.S., Wake County strikes a solid balance between cost and quality. While living costs here are slightly above average, they’re offset by higher-than-average incomes and a wide variety of home styles at different price points. Cities like Wake Forest offer affordability with charm, and buyers appreciate options that don’t force them to sacrifice quality of life for budget.

Home is where you should feel safe—and Wake County delivers. Many of its communities, including Cary, Apex, and Wake Forest, routinely score high marks for safety. Lower crime rates mean more peace of mind for residents and greater appeal for families looking to put down roots.

A big part of Wake County’s charm lies in how easy it is to enjoy the outdoors and community life. The region boasts miles of greenways, a strong parks system, and around 220 sunny days per year. From weekend festivals to farmers markets, there’s always something happening—making it easy for newcomers to feel at home fast.

When it comes to selling your home, you’re not just marketing bedrooms and bathrooms—you’re selling a lifestyle. And in Wake County, that lifestyle includes health, opportunity, safety, community, and convenience. The secret’s out: quality of life matters, and Wake County delivers.

This Week’s Featured Essential Oil

Bergamot Essential Oil

A Citrus Scent with Powerful Benefits

Bergamot essential oil, derived from the rind of the Citrus bergamia fruit, is a fragrant and versatile oil widely used in aromatherapy, skincare, and even the food and beverage industry. Best known as the distinct flavor in Earl Grey tea, this essential oil offers a wide array of benefits for the body and mind.

Bergamot is primarily grown in southern Italy, where the climate and soil conditions are ideal. The essential oil is cold-pressed from the peel of the fruit, producing a light greenish-yellow oil with a fresh, sweet, and slightly spicy citrus aroma.

One of the most well-known uses of bergamot oil is for its uplifting and calming effects. Inhaling its scent can:

  • Help relieve stress, anxiety, and depression

  • Promote a sense of relaxation and well-being

  • Support better sleep quality when diffused before bedtime

It is often used in blends for mood enhancement or in meditation practices for its grounding-yet-light aroma.

Bergamot oil is prized in natural skincare, but with a note of caution (see safety tips below). It offers:

  • Antibacterial and antiseptic properties that help with acne and oily skin

  • Support in treating eczema and psoriasis

  • A brightening effect when diluted and applied to skin (in the absence of sun exposure)

It is also added to shampoos for its refreshing scent and potential to help control oily scalp conditions.

Other Uses

  • Digestive aid: When used in massage (properly diluted), bergamot oil can relieve indigestion and bloating.

  • Natural deodorizer: Its clean scent makes it ideal for DIY perfumes, room sprays, and cleaning products.

  • Immune booster: Some studies suggest bergamot oil may help stimulate immune response due to its antimicrobial properties.

Bergamot essential oil contains compounds known as furocoumarins, which can cause photosensitivity—a reaction that can lead to burns or skin discoloration when exposed to sunlight after topical use. To use safely:

  • Always dilute with a carrier oil before applying to the skin

  • Avoid direct sun or UV exposure for at least 12 hours after application

  • Choose furocoumarin-free (FCF) versions if available for topical use

Bergamot essential oil is a powerful and pleasant tool in the world of natural wellness. Whether you're looking to lift your mood, clear your skin, or simply enjoy its crisp citrus aroma, this oil is a beautiful addition to your essential oil collection—used safely and wisely.

Big Ed’s in Garner: A Taste of Southern Tradition

Tucked along Timber Drive in Garner, North Carolina, Big Ed’s Restaurant is more than just a place to grab a bite—it’s a continuation of a local legacy that began more than six decades ago. Known for its warm hospitality and timeless comfort food, Big Ed’s in Garner brings the charm of old-school Southern cooking to a growing community that values tradition as much as taste.

The original Big Ed’s was founded in 1958 by Ed Watkins, a Wake County native who crafted his recipes from childhood meals on his family’s farm. After decades of success in Raleigh, the restaurant’s spirit expanded to Garner in 2019, where the same dedication to homestyle cooking and community values now thrives.

Stepping into Big Ed’s in Garner is like stepping into a cozy country kitchen. Breakfast is served all day, featuring oversized pancakes, flaky biscuits smothered in sausage gravy, and thick slices of country ham. Weekday lunch and dinner menus offer comfort classics like fried catfish, chicken salad sandwiches, and down-home vegetable sides that taste like they came straight from a Southern garden.

Big Ed’s has quickly become a favorite among Garner residents, appreciated for its hearty portions, reasonable prices, and inviting staff. Locals often rave about the "larger-than-life" pancakes and the feeling of being treated like family. The décor is simple but nostalgic, evoking the feel of a farmhouse kitchen, with checkered tablecloths and walls lined with vintage memorabilia.

What sets Big Ed’s apart, aside from the food, is its commitment to consistency and heart. Whether it’s your first visit or your fiftieth, you can count on a plate that’s been prepared with care and a greeting that feels like home.

Now operated by Sam and Lynn Hobgood, who took over the original restaurant in 2006, the Garner location holds true to Big Ed Watkins’ founding principles: good food, made right, served with genuine Southern hospitality. The Hobgoods have been careful stewards of this legacy, ensuring that every dish—from grits to gravy—honors the original recipes while still fitting into the rhythm of modern life.

Whether you’re a lifelong fan or a curious newcomer, Big Ed’s in Garner offers a dining experience that feels like Sunday supper at grandma’s house—no reservation required.
