Backpacks of Hope: Charlotte Woman Leads

Back-to-School Drive for Foster Youth

In Charlotte, the spirit of giving was on full display this July as nonprofit leader Aisha Collins led a heartwarming initiative to support children in foster care across Mecklenburg County. Through her organization, Heart & Hands United, Aisha launched the “Backpacks of Hope” drive, which successfully collected and distributed over 2,000 backpacks filled with essential school supplies.

The effort began in early June and culminated in a community-wide distribution event held on Saturday, July 20th, at Marshall Park in Uptown Charlotte. Partnering with local businesses, faith groups, and nearly 100 volunteers, Aisha ensured that every child heading into the new school year felt equipped and encouraged—regardless of their personal challenges or circumstances.

Each backpack included notebooks, pencils, crayons, hygiene kits, and handwritten notes of encouragement from community members. The initiative brought smiles, tears, and a deep sense of community connection. “Every child deserves to start the school year with confidence,” Aisha said. “This is about dignity, belonging, and letting these kids know they’re seen and supported.”

How to Help:
The need doesn’t end in July. Aisha’s team continues to accept donations for mid-year school supply replenishment and care kits. You can contribute supplies or donate online at heartandhandsunited.org. Monetary donations, supply drives, and volunteers are always welcome. Collection sites remain open at select Charlotte-area libraries, churches, and small businesses through August 15th.

Stories like this are powerful reminders that heroism isn’t always loud—it’s found in the quiet, consistent efforts to make a difference. Whether it’s helping children in foster care, building community gardens, or simply extending a hand, North Carolinians like Aisha prove that compassion builds stronger communities—one backpack at a time.
