Hello friends!
Today, August 14, we pause to remember and honor a remarkable group of Native American heroes—the Navajo Code Talkers. During World War II, these brave men used their native language to create an unbreakable code that played a vital role in securing victory and saving countless lives. Their courage, ingenuity, and dedication remind us of the power of unity and the strength found in diverse voices.
National Navajo Code Talkers Day is not just a tribute to history; it’s a celebration of resilience, culture, and the often unseen contributions that shape our world. As we reflect on their legacy, let’s carry forward their spirit of service and honor the many ways individuals quietly make a difference.
Thank you for joining me in remembering these extraordinary heroes today.
See you out there in beautiful Wake,
Diane
—Philippians 4:6

Secret Language: The Navajo Code Talkers developed a code based on their native language that was never broken by enemy forces during the entire war. The original code consisted of about 200 words from the Navajo language assigned to military terms and letters — for example, “turtle” meant “tank.”

A Beacon of the Outer Banks
Located on Hatteras Island in North Carolina’s Outer Banks, the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse stands as an enduring symbol of the rugged Atlantic coastline and maritime history. At 210 feet tall, it is the tallest brick lighthouse in the United States — a striking landmark that has guided sailors safely through treacherous waters for over a century.
Visiting the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse offers a unique blend of history, adventure, and natural beauty. Climb the 257 steps to the top for breathtaking panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean and the surrounding Cape Hatteras National Seashore. On a clear day, you can see for miles, taking in the rolling dunes, sandy beaches, and sparkling waves that define this coastal region.
The lighthouse is set within the Cape Hatteras National Seashore, a protected area offering miles of undeveloped beaches, excellent fishing, bird watching, and hiking trails. Nearby, charming beach towns provide local dining, shops, and cultural experiences that celebrate Outer Banks life.
Climb the Lighthouse: Feel the history beneath your feet as you ascend the spiral staircase, ending with stunning views from the lantern room.
Visitor Center: Learn about the lighthouse’s rich history, its engineering marvels, and the stories of the brave keepers who maintained the light.
Beach Time: Relax on pristine beaches perfect for swimming, surfing, or simply soaking up the sun.
Wildlife Viewing: The surrounding national seashore is home to a variety of birds, sea turtles, and other wildlife.
Fishing and Water Sports: Take advantage of world-class fishing spots or try kayaking and paddleboarding along the coast.
Constructed in 1870, the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse was built to replace earlier lighthouses that failed to withstand harsh weather and shifting sands. Its distinctive black-and-white spiral stripes make it instantly recognizable — a design meant to stand out against the landscape and sea.
In 1999, the lighthouse was famously moved nearly half a mile inland to protect it from shoreline erosion, a monumental engineering feat that preserved this historic beacon for future generations.
Whether you’re a history buff, nature lover, or beachgoer, the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is a must-visit destination that captures the spirit of North Carolina’s coast. Its towering presence and stunning surroundings invite visitors to experience the magic and mystery of the Outer Banks firsthand.

Dozens of volunteers and law enforcement have scoured the area, with a $10,000 reward offered for information. Honoring Native American Service from North Carolina in World War II
While North Carolina did not have any Navajo Code Talkers during World War II, the state’s Native American communities made significant contributions to the war effort. Many Native Americans from North Carolina bravely served in the U.S. military, demonstrating courage and dedication in various roles across the armed forces.
Members of tribes such as the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians and other indigenous groups from the region enlisted in large numbers. They served as soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines, taking part in battles both at home and abroad. Their service helped to protect freedom and democracy during a challenging time in history.
Beyond combat, Native American servicemen and women brought unique skills, cultural strengths, and resilience to their units. Their stories are an important part of North Carolina’s rich heritage and a reminder of the diverse backgrounds of those who have defended our nation.
As we honor the legacy of the famous Navajo Code Talkers nationally, it’s equally important to recognize and celebrate the valor and contributions of Native Americans from North Carolina who played vital roles in World War II.
