Historic Yates Mill County Park

Nestled just five miles south of downtown Raleigh, Historic Yates Mill County Park is a captivating blend of history, nature, and hands-on learning. Whether you’re a history enthusiast, a nature lover, or a family seeking a memorable outing, this 174-acre park has something for everyone. Established in the 1750s, Yates Mill is Wake County’s last remaining operable gristmill. It functioned for nearly 200 years, grinding corn and wheat, and even carding wool. Added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1970, the mill underwent restoration to return it to working order by 2005, standing today as a living testament to the region’s agricultural heritage.

Beyond the mill itself, the park offers scenic hiking trails winding around a 20-acre pond, ideal for spotting local wildlife and migrating waterfowl. Visitors can also enjoy designated fishing areas, observe animals in their natural habitats, and take part in educational programs, summer camps, and special events designed for all ages. The visitor center provides engaging exhibits and displays on milling history and the area’s natural heritage, enriching the experience for curious minds.

Historic Yates Mill County Park is perfect for family outings, offering interactive and educational experiences that bring history and nature to life. Its picturesque landscapes provide a tranquil escape from city life, while the passionate volunteers and staff add a personal touch to every visit. The park is open daily from 8 a.m. to sunset, with mill tours available seasonally. Admission to the park is free, and mill tours typically cost $3–$5.

Whether you’re exploring history, enjoying the outdoors, or simply seeking a peaceful retreat, Historic Yates Mill County Park offers a rich and rewarding experience where the past and present harmoniously coexist. It’s truly a must-visit destination in Raleigh.

What Hurricane Erin Means for the Raleigh Area

Hurricane Erin, now a powerful storm offshore, is not expected to make landfall in Central North Carolina. For Raleigh and the Triangle, the main impacts will likely be increased clouds and scattered rain later this week, but no major flooding or damaging winds are anticipated.

Along the coast, however, the risks are much greater. Rip currents, large waves, and coastal flooding are expected through midweek, especially on the Outer Banks and beaches from Morehead City to Emerald Isle. States of emergency and evacuations are already in place for parts of Dare and Hyde counties.

For inland residents, this storm serves as a reminder to stay prepared. While Central NC should avoid the worst, coastal areas face dangerous conditions, and forecasts can shift quickly. Read More

9-Year-Old Brings Joy with Compliment Stand in 2025

In July 2025, 9-year-old Ethan Wargo from Sycamore, Illinois, set up a “Compliment Stand” in his front yard—offering kind words to anyone who stopped by. Inspired by a graphic novel he read, Ethan flipped the idea of an “insult stand” into something positive, spending hours each day asking visitors about their day and giving heartfelt compliments.

His twin sister, Claire, joined in by selling her artwork nearby. While Ethan didn’t charge for compliments, generous visitors left tips, which the siblings used to buy a mini fridge for their bedroom lounge.

The community quickly embraced Ethan’s kindness, returning again and again, touched by his thoughtful gestures. For Ethan, making others feel good also lifted his own spirits—and he plans to continue spreading joy all summer.

This story is a wonderful reminder that even small acts of kindness can make a big difference in our communities.

"And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up."
