Tiny Homes in Wake County: Small Spaces, Big Impact

With housing costs in Wake County rising faster than incomes, tiny homes are gaining attention as a creative, affordable option. Thanks to zoning changes and new developments, small-footprint living is moving from idea to reality.

Nomad Village

Located at 3708 Rock Quarry Road, Nomad Village is the first dedicated tiny-home village in Raleigh. Plans call for 30–40 homes, each about 500 square feet, with shared amenities like a coworking space, pool, and gym. Homes will be offered as flexible rentals, appealing to downsizers, remote workers, and anyone seeking lower costs and less upkeep.

Raleigh’s Unified Development Ordinance now allows tiny homes in many residential zones, with size caps of 800 sq. ft. footprint or 1,200 sq. ft. total. Cottage courts and accessory dwelling units (ADUs) are also easier to build, giving developers and homeowners more options.

Tiny homes cost less to build and maintain, use less energy, and make more efficient use of land. For residents squeezed by high mortgages or rents, they offer flexibility and affordability without sacrificing community.

While financing and permitting hurdles remain, projects like Nomad Village show that small homes can play a big role in easing Wake County’s housing crunch. With more builders watching closely, it’s likely we’ll see additional communities pop up across the county.

🦸‍♂️ A Teen's Heroic Act: Owen Burns Saves His Sister with a Slingshot

In the quiet town of Alpena Township, Michigan, a 13-year-old boy named Owen Burns became an unexpected hero. While at home with his 8-year-old sister, Owen heard her screams from the backyard. Rushing outside, he witnessed a man emerging from the woods, grabbing his sister, and attempting to abduct her. Without hesitation, Owen sprang into action.

Armed only with a slingshot—a simple toy his mother had purchased for $3—Owen loaded it with a marble and a rock. From approximately 200 feet away, he fired at the assailant, striking him in the head and chest. The unexpected attack caused the kidnapper to release his sister, allowing her to escape to safety. The assailant fled the scene but was later apprehended by police, identified by the injuries sustained from Owen's quick thinking and precise aim.

The Burns family, including parents Andrew and Margaret, were understandably shaken by the incident. Margaret expressed her relief, stating, "They were in a state of panic and screaming... the only word I could make out of the whole conversation was 'kidnap.'" Despite the trauma, the family was immensely proud of Owen's bravery.

Owen, a fan of video games and a member of the local 4-H club, humbly downplayed his actions, attributing his success to luck. However, his courage and quick thinking undoubtedly saved his sister's life that day.

The 17-year-old suspect, whose name has not been publicly released, faced multiple charges, including attempted kidnapping and assault. He was later tried as an adult.

Owen's story serves as a powerful reminder that heroism can come from the most unexpected places, and that even the simplest tools can make a significant difference in moments of crisis.

"And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up."
