Oak Island, NC
Oak Island, North Carolina, is a charming barrier island located in Brunswick County along the southern coast, where the Atlantic Ocean meets the mouth of the Cape Fear River. Known for its natural beauty and rich history, Oak Island attracts visitors year-round who seek a quieter, family-friendly beach experience.
The island boasts approximately 12 miles of wide, sandy, south-facing beachesâa unique feature on the East Coast that provides longer sun exposure throughout the day. Its landscape is graced by dunes, sea oats, and maritime forests, creating a peaceful and picturesque setting. Behind the island runs the Intracoastal Waterway, offering scenic views and boating opportunities, while the mix of fresh and saltwater ecosystems supports diverse marine and bird life. Oak Island also provides the rare chance to witness both sunrise and sunset over the water at certain times of year. Unlike many commercialized beach towns, Oak Island maintains a laid-back atmosphere with no high-rise hotels or neon lights, featuring instead quiet neighborhoods, fishing piers, and cozy beach cottages.
Historically, the islandâs story begins with the Waccamaw tribe, Indigenous peoples who first inhabited the area. European settlers arrived in the 1600s and 1700s, drawn by fishing, farming, and maritime trade. Military history is significant here, especially Fort Caswell, built in 1836 on the islandâs eastern tip. The fort played roles during the Civil War, both World Wars, and the Cold War, and today serves as a Christian retreat center while preserving much of its historic structure for visitors. The Oak Island Lighthouse, constructed in 1958 and once the brightest in the U.S., is another iconic landmark, notable for its precast concrete construction and standing 153 feet tall. Originally divided into two townsâYaupon Beach and Long Beachâthe island merged in 1999 to form the Town of Oak Island. Over the years, it has grown from a small fishing community into a popular summer destination that still holds onto its small-town charm.
Visitors to Oak Island can enjoy a wide range of activities, including surf and pier fishingâsuch as at the Oak Island Pierâor chartered deep-sea fishing trips. Boating and kayaking are popular on the Intracoastal Waterway and surrounding marshes. The island is also an important nesting ground for sea turtles, especially loggerheads, making turtle watching a special experience. Nature enthusiasts can explore trails in parks like Middleton Park and the Oak Island Nature Center, while history buffs will appreciate guided tours of Fort Caswell.
What truly sets Oak Island apart is its authentic coastal lifestyle as a year-round residential community, free from the hustle and bustle of tourist traps or busy boardwalks. The local dining scene features seafood shacks and mom-and-pop shops, reflecting a strong community spirit dedicated to preserving the islandâs natural beauty and small-town feel. Nearby Southport adds historical depth and offers ferry access to Fort Fisher and Bald Head Island, rounding out the rich coastal experience that Oak Island provides.

Road Repair in Apex After Last Weekâs Storm?
Residents and commuters are wondering why a major road in Apex remains closed days after last weekâs severe storm. Officials say the delay is due to extensive damage caused by flooding and fallen trees, which have made repairs more complex and time-consuming than initially expected.
Utility crews are working to restore power lines and clear debris safely, while engineers assess the structural integrity of the roadway and nearby drainage systems. Safety remains the top priority, which means the road will stay closed until repairs meet all standards. Read More

đ GOOD NEWS SPOTLIGHT
StageLift, a youth theater company founded in 2022, is brightening the lives of Phoenix seniors with free live performances at senior centers and retirement homes. This summer alone, theyâve delivered over 20 shows, bringing the magic of theater right to their doorstep.
Their repertoire includes classics like Our Town, original monologues inspired by seniorsâ stories, and lively comedies that spark laughter and sing-alongs. With minimal sets, the troupe relies on heartfelt storytelling and engaging performances.
More than entertainment, StageLift builds meaningful connections. After shows, teens chat and share moments with residents, creating lasting friendships. Seniors like Margaret Lewis, 84, say, âStageLift brings light into our lives.â
StageLift also empowers its teen members with free training in acting, directing, and leadership, helping them grow on and off stage. Teen Sophia Ramirez shares, âItâs taught me that art can heal and unite.â
Looking ahead, StageLift plans to expand across Arizona, launch digital shows for homebound elders, and start a âStory Exchangeâ pairing teens and seniors to create original scripts from eldersâ memories. Artistic director Marissa Chen hopes to build âan intergenerational theater community where every voice matters.â
