Jeff & Pam Gorton, Owners/Operators Veteran-Owned Program Brings Specialized, Lifesaving Water-Safety Training to Raleigh-Area Children
A Mission to Help Prevent Childhood Drowning
For Jeff and Pam Gorton, teaching children to swim is not simply about recreation. It is about giving young children practical skills that may help them survive an unexpected fall into the water.
Their commitment was strengthened by conversations with a friend who works as an EMT. He shared that he is called far too often to emergencies involving children who have drowned. Hearing what first responders and families experience made the urgent need for early water-safety education impossible to ignore.
Drowning is the leading cause of death from unintentional injury among children ages 1 to 4. It is often quick and quiet, and it can happen in a backyard pool, neighborhood swimming area, lake, or vacation rental—even when adults believe a child is safely nearby.
Jeff and Pam have made it their mission to help prevent these tragedies by teaching babies and young children how to become more capable and confident in the water. Water Babies lessons gradually introduce essential skills such as safe entry, breath control, floating, turning, maintaining balance, and moving toward safety.
The program begins with simple, age-appropriate activities and builds each skill through repetition, songs and play. Children learn how their bodies respond in the water without being pressured or frightened. As they develop, they progress toward greater independence and stronger swimming ability.
These lessons cannot make a child drown-proof, and they never replace constant adult supervision, secure pool barriers, or properly fitted life jackets. What they can provide is valuable preparation. If a child unexpectedly enters the water, knowing how to float, turn, control breathing, and move toward an exit could make a critical difference.
Jeff and Pam want Greater Raleigh families to think of swimming lessons as more than another childhood activity. Their goal is to equip children with water-survival skills, build respect for the water and help prevent families from experiencing the heartbreaking emergencies that first responders encounter far too often.
For Water Babies of Greater Raleigh, every lesson has a purpose: to help one more child become safer in and around the water.

Little Swimmers, Big Benefits!
Swimming is more than splashing and having fun—it helps babies and young children grow stronger, safer, and more confident.
Builds strength from head to toe: Moving through the water gently exercises the arms, legs, neck, heart, and lungs.
Improves balance and coordination: Reaching, kicking, floating, and turning help children develop greater body awareness and control.
Introduces essential water-safety skills: Early lessons teach children how to feel comfortable in the water while developing skills that may help them respond more safely around pools and other bodies of water.
Encourages healthy routines: Regular swimming may stimulate a healthy appetite, release extra energy, and support more restful sleep.
Builds confidence—not fear: Positive experiences from an early age can help children develop a healthy respect for water without becoming unnecessarily afraid of it.
Strengthens social development: Group lessons give little swimmers opportunities to watch, interact, play, and learn alongside other children.
Connects parents, too: Swim classes are a wonderful place for parents and caregivers to meet other families, share experiences, and form new friendships.
