Hello friends!

It’s Monday, and you know what that means—time for fresh starts, strong coffee, and… second-hand fashion? That’s right! Today is National Second-Hand Wardrobe Day, and we’re here for it in style.

Who says sustainable shopping can’t be fabulous? Whether it’s a vintage leather jacket with stories to tell, a pair of jeans that have danced through decades, or a quirky hat that practically chooses you, second-hand finds bring a sense of character you simply can’t get off the rack.

So, why not celebrate today by:

  • Thrifting an outfit for your next big adventure,

  • Restyling a forgotten favorite hiding in your closet, or

  • Hosting a closet swap with friends (free fashion + snacks = win-win).

Let’s make this Monday less about the “same old” and more about the “new-to-you.” Who knows? Your next favorite outfit might just be waiting for a second chance!

See you out there in beautiful Wake,
Diane

Hawkwatch at Grandfather Mountain: A September Sky Show

Each September, Grandfather Mountain becomes the stage for one of nature’s most breathtaking events—the annual migration of raptors. Known as Hawkwatch, this month-long experience draws visitors to the park to witness hawks, falcons, eagles, ospreys, and other birds of prey soaring southward against the vibrant backdrop of North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains.

The best viewing spot is Linville Peak, just beyond the Mile High Swinging Bridge, where expert naturalists and volunteers are on hand to identify species and share fascinating facts about their journey. Additional overlooks, like Half Moon Overlook, provide excellent vantage points for spotting “kettles”—large groups of broad-winged hawks spiraling upward on thermal currents.

Hawkwatch runs daily from September 1–30, with peak activity typically occurring in mid- to late September. The best viewing time is late morning to early afternoon, when warm air currents lift raptors higher into the sky. Grandfather Mountain is open from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., with last entry at 4:30 p.m. and trails closing at 5:00 p.m.

Admission is included with general park entry, with dynamic pricing based on the day of visit—approximately $28–32 for adults, $26–30 for seniors, and $12 for children ages 4–12. Tickets can be purchased online or at the gate.

Visitors are encouraged to bring binoculars or spotting scopes, as well as a camera to capture the stunning views. Packing a picnic or enjoying a meal at Mildred’s Grill inside the park makes for a perfect midday break. After birdwatching, explore the park’s nature trails, wildlife habitats, and museum exhibits.

Hawkwatch isn’t just an unforgettable autumn outing—it’s also part of a long-standing conservation effort. Each bird spotted and recorded contributes to migration research, helping protect these incredible species for generations to come.

The move aims to give early-morning travelers the option of a cocktail, beer, or wine before their flights. Ziya the Brave: A Dog’s Courage Saves His Family

On a misty August morning in California, danger came charging—literally. An agitated bull had escaped its pen and was thundering toward a family enjoying a peaceful day on their 80-acre property.

In that split second, before fear could take hold, Ziya—a loyal Belgian Malinois—leapt into action. Without hesitation, he placed himself between the massive animal and the people he loved most. The bull kicked with tremendous force, knocking out one of Ziya’s teeth. Yet, even in pain, he stood his ground long enough for his family to reach safety.

Thanks to Ziya’s quick thinking and boundless courage, what could have been a devastating tragedy ended with hugs, tears of relief, and one very brave dog recovering from his injuries. Today, Ziya is not only back on his paws—he’s also being recognized as a finalist for the 17th Annual Hambone Award, which honors extraordinary acts of heroism by pets.

Because heroes come in all forms—and sometimes, they have four paws and wagging tails. May this story remind us that courage often shows up in the quietest, most loyal hearts—animal and human alike—and that goodness is always worth celebrating.

"And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up."
