Why did the calendar go to therapy?

Because it had too many dates and couldn’t get over its past.

Screams in the Shadows: A Night at Phillips Haunted Farm in Cary

Just minutes from the polished streets of Cary, the cornfields turn treacherous after dark. Phillips Farms of Cary sheds its daytime family-fun skin and becomes something far more deliciously sinister: Phillips Haunted Farm.

On Friday and Saturday nights this fall, the working farm transforms into a multi-attraction scream park that feels like a classic Southern haunt done right. For $35, you get access to four distinct scare zones—Field of Lost Souls, Rebellion Trail, The Gore House, and Big Top Terror—plus a haunted wagon ride that rattles you deeper into the darkness. Free-roaming ghouls prowl the grounds between attractions, so even the walk from one fright to the next keeps your pulse elevated.

The beauty of this place is its scale and variety. One moment you’re navigating a fog-choked trail where something (or someone) is definitely following you. The next you’re inside a circus-themed nightmare or a gore-soaked house that leans hard into classic horror tropes. The wagon ride serves as both intermission and fresh round of jump scares, rolling past shadowed figures that appear and vanish with unsettling timing.

It’s not a massive national production with Hollywood-level sets, and that’s part of its charm. This is a local farm haunt with heart—and just enough edge to leave teenagers and adults properly rattled. The actors are energetic, the paths are dark, and the atmosphere feels authentically rural and slightly unhinged. Families with younger kids should stick to the daytime Fun Park; this experience is firmly recommended for ages 13 and up.

Tickets are sold on-site only (cash or credit—no ATM), and the Haunted Snack Pass for $40 adds a bag of kettle corn and a lemonade for those who need a little sugar courage between screams. The farm is located at 6800 Good Hope Church Road, open Fridays and Saturdays from 8 to 11 p.m. through the end of October.

If you’re looking for a genuine, no-frills Triangle scare without the long drive to the bigger Triad attractions, Phillips Haunted Farm delivers exactly what a good October night should: cornfields, shadows, and the kind of laughter that only comes after you’ve just screamed your head off.

Breaking This Week in Wake County Schools

The Wake County Public School System has released a revised student reassignment plan after collecting feedback from more than 800 parents, students, and community members. The proposal affects 42 schools and is designed to ease overcrowding, reduce reliance on trailers, and prepare for the opening of the new Morrisville High School in 2027-28.

A public hearing was held this week, and the school board is scheduled to take a final vote on November 17.

Classroom Screen Time Review

WCPSS also released new data showing students spend significant time on school devices:

  • Middle and high school students average more than 90 minutes per day.

  • YouTube is the most-used app (about 39 minutes daily for many high schoolers).

The school board is reviewing overall technology use, costs, and whether to reduce device numbers or shift toward more traditional pen-and-paper work. Discussions continue through late October and November, with options expected later this fall.

Two Food Recalls Affecting Wake County Shoppers

Kayem Foods is recalling more than 1.5 million pounds of ready-to-eat meat and poultry products (brands including Kayem, Al Fresco, McKenzie, Genoa, and others) due to possible temperature abuse during storage. Look for establishment numbers EST. M/P 7839, EST. P 20935A, or EST. M 9520 inside the USDA mark. Do not eat—throw away or return to the store.

Separately, Lidl is recalling one lot of Gelatelli Coffee & Vanilla Gelato with Coffee Sauce & Cookie Pieces (16 oz) over possible Listeria contamination. Check for lot 085261, best-by MAR/26/2028, and UPC 4 0564897 22458 on the bottom of the container. Discard or return to any Lidl for a full refund (no receipt needed).
