Why did the pumpkin howl at the moon?
Because it was tired of being squashed… and wanted to have a gourd time! 🌕🎃

All Aboard the Halloween Express
There’s something pure magic about hopping on a train as the North Carolina woods turn gold and the air carries just a hint of woodsmoke and candy. At New Hope Valley Railway in New Hill (just a short hop from Apex), that magic gets a playful Halloween twist every October with the beloved Track or Treat Halloween Express.
Climb aboard open-sided cars and roll through the piney woods where friendly Halloween characters wait around every curve. Count Dracula tips his cape from the shadows. Witches wave from bubbling cauldrons. Smiling pumpkins line the tracks, and if you’re lucky you might even spot the legendary Headless Brakeman or a ghost train flickering through the trees. It’s spooky enough to feel festive, yet gentle enough that even the tiniest goblins stay delighted rather than terrified.
Daylight rides are pure sunshine-and-smiles fun—perfect for toddlers and younger kids who want the full Halloween atmosphere without the dark. Catch a sunset departure and watch the sky turn orange as the woods grow atmospheric. Later evening runs lean into the night with just enough extra mystery to make older kids (and their parents) grin. Costumes are not only allowed—they’re enthusiastically encouraged. The more witches, superheroes, dinosaurs, and glittery ghosts, the better.
Back in the railyard the party continues. Strike a pose with singing pumpkins, tour the playfully haunted caboose, and fuel up at local food trucks. It’s the kind of low-key, high-charm outing that feels like a local secret even though families across the Triangle have been riding it for years.
Tickets sell out fast every season, so don’t wait. Grab yours at triangletrain.com before they disappear into the October mist.
Whether you’re chasing mild daytime thrills with little ones or a slightly moodier evening ride under the stars, the Track or Treat Halloween Express delivers exactly what fall weekends were made for: trains, costumes, candy-adjacent treats, and memories that stick long after the last jack-o’-lantern is put away.
All aboard—Halloween is calling.

Wake County’s Big News This Week
Wake County Cruelty Case
Nearly 20 Chihuahuas were pulled from a Willow Spring home last week after an animal cruelty investigation. Ten of the tiny dogs went to Longleaf Animal Rescue in Hillsborough—the largest single intake day in the group’s history. The pups arrived dirty, underweight, and in need of medical care, but foster families quickly stepped up to help.
Former Jeopardy Contestant Faces Charges
Philip Joseph “Joey” DeSena, a 44-year-old Raleigh resident and former Jeopardy! contestant, was arrested and charged with 10 felony counts of second-degree sexual exploitation of a minor. He is being held without bail.
I-540 Speed Demons Meet Their Match
Raleigh police put the brakes on reckless driving last week, snagging nearly 140 speeders in a single-day crackdown on Interstate 540 and nearby major roads. Officers clocked one driver flying at 117 mph in a 70 mph zone and handed out 212 total citations, including license and seat belt violations.
High-visibility enforcement, they say, is all about keeping the roads safer—and holding lead-footed drivers accountable.
Free LEGO Fun for Kids at Oberlin Library!
Young builders, get ready to snap, stack, and create! On Tuesday, November 24, from 4:30–5:15 p.m., the Oberlin Regional Library is hosting a free “Learning with Lego” session for pre-K through 5th graders. Led by the library’s Teen Leadership Corps, kids will build, learn, and play in a hands-on LEGO adventure.
No cost, just creativity—perfect for a fun after-school hour.
