A Little Less Hurry, a Little More Autumn
A peaceful fall escape to Sarah P. Duke Gardens
Some days invite us to slow down, step outside, and enjoy the beauty around us. A lovely fall day is one of them—and Sarah P. Duke Gardens in Durham offers a wonderful place to do just that.
Across its 55 acres, winding paths, ponds, and inviting gardens make it easy to leave the day’s demands behind. November brings a quieter kind of beauty: the graceful shapes of branches, the texture of changing leaves, and soft autumn light across the landscape. Depending on the season’s timing, lingering fall color may add a golden touch to your stroll.
Explore the peaceful Asiatic Arboretum or wander through the Blomquist Garden of Native Plants. There’s no need to see everything. Follow whatever catches your eye, pause beside the water, and enjoy the pleasure of having nowhere else to be.
Bring a friend, share an unhurried conversation, or savor a little solitude. Add lunch in Durham afterward, and you have a delightful day retreat without packing a suitcase.
The to-do list can wait. Today, trade a little hurry for a little wonder.
Plan your visit: 420 Anderson Street, Durham. Admission is free; parking is currently $2 per hour. Grounds are open daily, 8 a.m. to sunset, with the main entrance and parking lot open 9 a.m.–5 p.m. in November.

Senior Pets Need Homes 🐾
An older pet can bring a wonderful new chapter to your life. In celebration of Adopt a Senior Pet Month, the Wake County Animal Center is lowering adoption fees throughout November to $25 for dogs and $5 for cats ages 8 and older.
These companions still have plenty of love to give—and deserve a home where they can spend their golden years feeling safe and cherished. Adopted pets are spayed or neutered, microchipped, and up to date on vaccinations.
Visit the center at 820 Beacon Lake Drive in Raleigh, with adoption hours daily from noon to 6 p.m. Your next best friend may be waiting.

Raleigh Counselor Earns State Honor
A caring heart and a commitment to students have earned Nicole Simpson of Barton Pond Elementary School statewide recognition. She has been named the 2026 North Carolina School Counselor of the Year, adding to her distinction as Wake County’s School Counselor of the Year.
Since Barton Pond opened in 2022, Simpson has helped build a school culture that supports students’ learning and emotional well-being. Her contributions include creating “Calm Ponds”—spaces where children can practice managing their emotions before returning to class.
Simpson received the news during a surprise celebration at her school. Congratulations to a local educator making a lasting difference in young lives!

Cary Fundraiser Tops $35,000
Sometimes, a little community spirit can make a remarkable difference. One Small Step Raleigh 2026, a fundraiser supporting research into Prader-Willi syndrome, has surpassed its $35,000 goal, with $35,793 raised on its campaign page.
The October 24 gathering was planned for Cary’s Marla Dorrel Park, home to the inclusive Kids Together Playground. Organizers invited families and supporters for a short, stroller-friendly walk followed by time to connect and play.
Behind every donation is a hopeful gesture toward individuals and families affected by Prader-Willi syndrome. Together, those gestures have added up to something worth celebrating—a reminder that our neighbors’ generosity can turn small steps into meaningful progress.
