Target Hair Thinning Where it Begins—at the Cellular Level

There are many products for hair thinning on the market, but they don’t all deliver on their claims. OneSkin’s OS-01 HAIR SCALP SERUM is the only peptide-powered scalp formula scientifically proven to target cellular senescence, a leading driver of age-related thinning, for thicker hair over time.

A Heartfelt Correction to Our Readers

In our recent Wake News & Events Readers’ Choice Awards announcement, I mistakenly reversed the first- and second-place winners in the Skin Care Spa category. The correct results are:

🥇 First Place: Pure Allure Aesthetics
🥈 Second Place: Skinsational Esthetics Skin Spa

I sincerely apologize to both businesses and to our readers for this error. Each of these wonderful local businesses deserves to have its achievement recognized accurately, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to set the record straight.

Please join me in congratulating Pure Allure Aesthetics and Skinsational Esthetics Skin Spa on their well-deserved honors. Thank you to everyone who voted and helped celebrate the businesses that make our community special.

With gratitude,
Diane

Wake County Has Rain on Its Winter Wish List

A good, soaking rain would be a welcome sight at Falls Lake. Prolonged dry weather has taken a toll on Raleigh’s primary drinking water source, with the city reporting its water supply pool at 63% full on November 3. While the exposed shoreline may look alarming, officials say the lake’s elevation alone does not measure how much drinking water remains available.

Winter could bring some help. NOAA’s seasonal outlook favors wetter conditions across the Southeast and East Coast as El Niño strengthens. That offers encouragement, though it is no promise that enough rain will fall locally to replenish the lake.

For now, giving our water supply a little extra care makes sense. Repairing a dripping faucet, running full laundry loads, and skipping unnecessary watering are simple ways to help while we wait for Mother Nature to lend a hand.

Meet Your 66 New Neighbors—Every Day!

Wake County’s welcome mat is getting quite a workout. The county is approaching 1.2 million residents, adding an average of 66 people a day—roughly 24,000 a year, according to reporting on the 2026 State of the County address. That’s a lot of new neighbors discovering their favorite coffee shop, local park, and place to call home.

With that growth comes a pressing question: How do we make room for everyone? County leaders reported that more than 2,840 affordable housing units have been created or preserved since 2024, exceeding a 2,500-unit goal three years ahead of schedule. Preserving existing affordable homes is part of that achievement, alongside creating new ones.

The milestone is encouraging, but the work continues. More residents mean greater demand for housing, schools, and services—and thoughtful planning will help keep Wake a welcoming place for newcomers and longtime neighbors alike.

Wake Honors Its Veterans

If you notice the Wake County Justice Center glowing green Nov. 4–11, there’s a meaningful reason. The county is participating in Operation Greenlight, a national initiative led by the National Association of Counties that invites communities to show veterans they are valued and supported.

Residents and businesses can join in by displaying a green light of their own. It’s a simple expression of gratitude—and an opportunity to share information about help available close to home.

Wake County Veterans Services assists veterans and their families with understanding benefits, preparing paperwork and navigating the VA claims process. The team can also provide information about health care enrollment, housing resources, employment support, and North Carolina benefits for veterans and their dependents.

Veterans and family members can now schedule an appointment online with a Veterans Services Officer, connecting directly with someone who can help them explore their options and take the next step.

This Veterans Day, let that green glow carry both a thank-you and a useful reminder: support is available long after the holiday ends.

From Sleeping in His Car to Helping Others Find Home

While helping people find food, clothing and shelter through his church, Jeffrey Rawlings was quietly facing the same uncertainty: some nights, he returned to sleep in his car.

It wasn’t his first experience with homelessness. As an NC State sophomore in the 1980s, Rawlings lost his apartment after his roommates left and he couldn’t cover the rent. He spent nearly three months living in his car, keeping his circumstances from his family out of embarrassment and concern about burdening his hardworking mother.

Years later, the end of a contract job triggered another housing crisis. Even after finding more work, he struggled to afford stable housing, moving between temporary accommodations and his car. He continued helping others through his church while keeping his own difficulties private.

When he finally confided in his pastor, the church helped him move into a shared apartment. His path toward stability took time, but in 2024, at 58, he bought a home in Raleigh.

As NC Newsline reported in February, Rawlings now helps people find permanent housing through Durham’s HEART program. By sharing what he once kept secret, he hopes to broaden understanding of who experiences homelessness. His story invites us to look at our neighbors with greater compassion—and remember that those offering help may need it, too.
