The North Carolina Drought Management Advisory Council (DMAC) has officially expanded the moderate drought classification to include 70 counties, including Wake. As of this month, Wake County has received only 34% of its usual rainfall this year, leaving us with a 1.64-inch deficit in precipitation compared to what is typical for this time of year.

The lack of rainfall and low soil moisture could impact water availability, not only for residents but also for agricultural purposes. Your gardens and the area crops may struggle due to insufficient soil moisture, which could affect local harvests. Lastley, streamflows are expected to be lower, potentially impacting aquatic habitats and increasing the likelihood of wildfires.

The drought management council suggests that we help by reducing non-essential water use and ensuring that any leaks are repaired promptly. I encourage you to keep up with updates from local authorities about drought conditions and any recommended actions. The risk of wildfires is higher during drought conditions, so please be vigilant with fire safety, especially in rural and wooded areas.
