📍 Today’s North Carolina Trivia📍

Did you know?
A little-known fact about Wake County, NC, is that it is home to the Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU), but did you know RDU was once a former military base? The airport was originally established in the 1940s as Morris Field, a training site for pilots during World War II. It wasn’t until 1952 that it was transformed into a public airport, and over the decades, it has grown to become one of the busiest airports in the Southeast, serving millions of passengers each year. The airport's unique history adds a fascinating layer to Wake County’s development and connection to both the past and future!

Discover Pinehurst The Heart of American Golf

Nestled in the heart of North Carolina, Pinehurst is a historic village that has earned its place as one of the premier golfing destinations in the world. Known as the "Home of American Golf," Pinehurst boasts rich history, stunning landscapes, and a vibrant community that makes it a must-visit for golf enthusiasts and travelers alike.

Pinehurst’s story began in 1895 when James Walker Tufts, a Boston businessman, founded the village as a health resort. However, it wasn't long before the area became synonymous with golf. In 1898, Donald Ross, one of the most famous golf course designers in history, designed Pinehurst No. 2, which would later become one of the most iconic courses in the world.

The course quickly garnered attention and fame, hosting its first U.S. Open in 1903. Over the years, Pinehurst No. 2 has played host to multiple prestigious tournaments, including U.S. Opens, U.S. Women’s Opens, and U.S. Amateur Championships, cementing its reputation as a true golfing mecca.

Today, Pinehurst is home to nine courses in total, offering golfers of all skill levels the opportunity to experience courses designed by legends like Donald Ross, Rees Jones, and Tom Fazio.

Of course, the main draw for visitors to Pinehurst is its world-class golf courses, and Pinehurst No. 2 is the crown jewel. Known for its challenging layout and the famous turtleback greens, it remains a top course for golfers seeking to test their skills on a legendary course. Golf enthusiasts should definitely book a round here or at any of the other eight courses in the area, each offering a unique challenge.

Beyond the courses, the Pinehurst Resort offers a luxurious experience with fine dining, a spa, and beautiful accommodations. Whether you’re looking to unwind after a round of golf or enjoy a relaxing day, the resort provides everything from world-class amenities to cozy rooms with views of the iconic course.

The village itself offers a charming, quaint atmosphere with historic architecture, boutique shopping, and a range of dining options. Take a stroll through the picturesque streets and explore local shops, cafes, and art galleries. Don't miss a visit to the Pinehurst Harness Track, where visitors can watch exciting horse races during the season.

For those interested in the rich history of Pinehurst, the Tufts Archives & Museum provides a fascinating look at the village’s origins and its evolution into a golf destination. Learn about the early days of Pinehurst and the influential figures who shaped its legacy.

For a break from the golf course, the Sandhills Horticultural Gardens offer a peaceful and beautiful place to explore. With its stunning collection of native plants and well-maintained gardens, it's an ideal spot for a leisurely walk or a quiet moment in nature.

Pinehurst is also home to an array of dining options, from upscale restaurants to casual eateries serving Southern comfort food. Enjoy a delicious meal after a round of golf, or sample local craft beers at one of the area’s breweries. The village also offers a variety of shops, including art galleries and antique stores, perfect for picking up a unique souvenir.

There’s no question that Pinehurst is a dream destination for golf lovers, but it offers so much more than just world-class courses. The area is steeped in history, and its peaceful, Southern charm makes it a perfect getaway for anyone looking to relax, unwind, and enjoy a slower pace of life.

  • A Golfer's Paradise: Whether you're an experienced golfer or a beginner, Pinehurst offers something for everyone. The variety of courses ensures that golfers of all levels can enjoy a challenge and immerse themselves in the rich history of the game.

  • Rich History and Heritage: From the legendary Pinehurst No. 2 to the charming village, Pinehurst offers visitors a unique opportunity to experience the roots of American golf. It’s a place where history meets modern luxury and natural beauty.

  • Peaceful Retreat: Beyond golf, Pinehurst provides a tranquil setting with luxurious resorts, scenic gardens, and a welcoming atmosphere. It’s an ideal spot to escape from the hustle and bustle and enjoy a relaxed, memorable vacation.

Pinehurst isn’t just a golf destination; it’s an experience that combines history, luxury, and natural beauty into one unforgettable package. Whether you're teeing off on one of the legendary courses, exploring the charming village, or simply soaking in the scenic views, Pinehurst offers something for everyone. So, grab your clubs and your sense of adventure, and head to the "Home of American Golf" for an unforgettable getaway.

US 1 Toll Options

Public Input Sessions Set for April 30 & May 5

Residents of Wake County will have two chances to weigh in on possible tolling options along the busy U.S. 1 North Corridor during upcoming public information sessions hosted by the Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (CAMPO).

These open-house-style events are scheduled for:

  • Tuesday, April 30
    🕔 5:00–7:00 PM
    📍 Abbotts Creek Community Center
    9950 Durant Road, Raleigh, NC

  • Monday, May 5
    🕔 5:00–7:00 PM
    📍 Wake Forest Renaissance Centre
405 S. Brooks Street, Wake Forest, NC

There will be no formal presentations, so visitors can stop by anytime during the two-hour window to review maps and materials, speak with transportation planners, and provide feedback on the proposed tolling options.

The sessions will explore alternatives that could help ease congestion and move long-delayed improvements forward on U.S. 1. Several tolling concepts are being considered—including express lanes and full tolling options—with the goal of improving traffic flow and funding critical infrastructure upgrades.

Can’t attend in person?
You can still share your thoughts by completing a brief survey online at: publicinput.com/us_1_tollingoptions. The survey will remain open through May 14.

Your feedback will help local leaders evaluate which approach best meets the region’s growing transportation needs.

Deadly Early Morning Fire

A deadly early morning fire in Holly Springs claimed the life of 75-year-old Frankie Carl Richardson on February 21, 2025. The blaze broke out around 3:45 a.m. at a home on Easton Street. Five family members, including a woman and four children, managed to escape the flames, but Richardson, who was in a side addition of the house, did not make it out.

Multiple fire departments responded and found the home fully engulfed. One firefighter was treated for minor injuries. The home was a total loss, and the cause of the fire is still under investigation. The American Red Cross is assisting the displaced family.

This Week’s Featured Essential Oil

Wintergreen Essential Oil

Nature’s Invigorating Relief

Wintergreen essential oil, derived from the leaves of the Gaultheria procumbens plant, offers a refreshing, minty scent that has been used for centuries in traditional medicine. Known for its soothing and invigorating properties, Wintergreen oil is a staple in both aromatherapy and natural wellness routines.

Key Benefits of Wintergreen Essential Oil

  1. Muscle and Joint Relief: One of the most popular uses for Wintergreen oil is its ability to ease sore muscles and joint discomfort. When diluted and massaged into the skin, it provides a cooling sensation that can help alleviate tension and inflammation, making it a go-to remedy for athletes or anyone experiencing physical strain.

  2. Refreshing and Energizing: With its crisp, minty aroma, Wintergreen oil can help clear the mind, uplift the spirit, and promote mental clarity. It’s often used to invigorate the senses during times of fatigue or sluggishness.

  3. Natural Pain Relief: Wintergreen contains methyl salicylate, a compound found in aspirin, which is known for its pain-relieving properties. This makes Wintergreen oil an excellent choice for addressing headaches and muscle pain.

  4. Skin Care: Wintergreen’s anti-inflammatory properties make it beneficial in skin care for soothing irritations and calming redness, though it should always be used with caution and in proper dilution due to its potency.

How to Use Wintergreen Essential Oil

  • Aromatically: Diffuse Wintergreen oil in your home or office to enjoy its refreshing, energizing scent. It can also help purify the air.

  • Topically: Mix Wintergreen with a carrier oil and massage it into areas of discomfort, such as sore muscles or tense shoulders. Always perform a patch test first to ensure skin sensitivity.

  • In a Bath: Add a few drops of Wintergreen oil to your bath water for a soothing, full-body relaxation experience.

While Wintergreen oil is effective and beneficial, it should be used with care. Due to its high concentration of methyl salicylate, it should not be ingested and must be diluted properly when applied topically. It’s also advised to keep it away from children and pregnant women.

Incorporating Wintergreen essential oil into your wellness routine can provide a natural, refreshing way to support both your physical and mental well-being. Whether you're soothing tired muscles or simply enjoying a burst of freshness, this essential oil is a versatile addition to any collection.
