🌞 Good morning, friends!
Today, April 30th, we celebrate a cause close to many hearts — National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day! 🐾
Shelters are filled with furry friends just waiting for someone like you to give them a second chance and a forever home. Whether it’s a playful puppy, a wise old cat, or a floppy-eared bunny, each has a story to tell and unconditional love to give.
If you've ever thought about adding a little more wag, wiggle, or purr to your life, today is the perfect day to open your heart (and your home). Even if you’re not ready to adopt, a visit, a donation, or simply spreading the word can make a world of difference.
Let’s make today a little brighter — one paw at a time! 🐶🐱
See you out there in beautiful Wake,
Diane

Charlotte’s story begins in 1768, when it was named in honor of Queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, the wife of King George III. Proudly waving its royal roots, the city quickly grew from a small settlement into a key player during the American Revolution, where its citizens' defiant spirit earned it the nickname "The Hornet's Nest" from British General Cornwallis.
In 1799, Charlotte found itself at the heart of America's first gold rush, setting the stage for its future prosperity. Fast forward to today, and Charlotte has transformed into a national banking powerhouse, second only to New York City.
Charlotte is home to the largest man-made whitewater river in the world at the U.S. National Whitewater Center.
The city boasts more than 210 parks, making it one of the greenest cities in the U.S.

It’s often called "The City of Churches" thanks to its remarkable number of historic congregations still active today.

What’s Happening in Wake County?
Kidnapping of Mother and Baby in Late-Night Home Invasion
Garner, NC – In a frightening overnight home invasion, a mother and her 13-month-old daughter were abducted from their Garner home by intruders demanding a $1 million ransom.
The incident occurred late Monday night on Buck Branch Drive, where three masked suspects—two men and a woman—broke into the home. The child's father was restrained with duct tape while the intruders kidnapped his wife, Alondra Benitez, and their infant daughter, Grecia.
An AMBER Alert was issued early Tuesday morning as law enforcement launched an urgent search. Fortunately, around 7:30 a.m., the mother and baby were found safe in Wake Forest after they showed up at a resident’s home asking for help.
The suspects fled in a black Nissan Altima and are still at large. Garner Police, along with the FBI and SBI, continue to investigate the case. Anyone with information is urged to contact authorities immediately.
Wake County SPCA Temporarily Closes Due to Dog Virus Outbreak
The SPCA of Wake County has temporarily closed its adoption center from April 27 to May 2, 2025, following a canine parvovirus (CPV) outbreak. The virus, which affects puppies and can be fatal if untreated, was detected in a group of puppies transferred from a nearby shelter. Fortunately, no deaths have occurred, and the infected puppies are being treated.
The outbreak prompted a deep cleaning of the facility, and all dogs exposed to the virus are being quarantined. The SPCA has contacted recent adopters and is advising all pet owners to ensure their animals are vaccinated.
Adoptions for cats will resume on April 30, and online applications are still being processed. The SPCA urges pet owners to monitor their animals for symptoms like lethargy or loss of appetite and seek veterinary care if needed. For updates, visit the SPCA’s website.
North Carolina Proposes Bill to Allow Unlicensed Teachers in Public Schools
A new proposal in North Carolina could significantly change the state's approach to teacher licensure. House Bill 806, currently under review, seeks to address the ongoing teacher shortage by allowing public schools to hire unlicensed teachers, a privilege currently reserved for charter schools. If passed, the bill would also eliminate class size limits for kindergarten through third grade and require that at least 50% of teachers in a school hold a valid teaching license.
Unlicensed teachers under this new proposal would still need to undergo preservice training, which includes courses on working with students with disabilities, effective communication, behavior management, and the safe use of seclusion and restraint. Supporters of the bill argue that it offers greater flexibility for schools struggling to find qualified candidates amidst a growing staffing crisis.
However, opponents have voiced concerns over the potential impact on education quality. They emphasize the value of certified teachers and worry that lowering standards could compromise student outcomes. The bill has passed its first reading and is now being reviewed by the K-12 Education Committee. If it advances, it is expected to be implemented in the 2025–2026 school year.
For further details on House Bill 806, you can read the full text of the bill on the official North Carolina General Assembly website.

Derived from the aromatic herb Rosmarinus officinalis, this essential oil carries a crisp, herbaceous scent and a rich history that dates back to ancient civilizations like the Greeks, Romans, and Egyptians.
Rosemary was once considered sacred and symbolic of remembrance and protection. Scholars in ancient Greece wore rosemary garlands while studying, believing it enhanced memory. In the Middle Ages, it was used to ward off illness and even evil spirits. Today, rosemary oil continues to be embraced in aromatherapy and holistic health practices around the world.
🌟 Health & Wellness Benefits
1. Boosts Mental Clarity & Focus
Inhaling rosemary essential oil has been shown to improve concentration, memory, and alertness. It’s a favorite among students and professionals needing a natural brain boost.
2. Supports Hair Growth
Rosemary oil stimulates blood circulation to the scalp, helping to prevent hair thinning and encourage healthy growth. It’s often used as a natural remedy for dandruff and itchy scalp as well.
3. Relieves Aches & Pains
With its anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties, rosemary oil can help soothe sore muscles, arthritis pain, and joint stiffness when diluted and applied topically.
4. Aids Digestion
When used in massage or inhaled, rosemary oil can help ease indigestion, bloating, and cramping due to its antispasmodic properties.
5. Natural Decongestant
Its crisp scent helps clear nasal passages and supports respiratory health, especially during cold and allergy seasons.
🌼 Everyday Uses
Aromatherapy: Add a few drops to a diffuser for a mental pick-me-up or respiratory relief.
Hair Care: Mix a few drops into your shampoo or create a scalp massage oil with a carrier like coconut oil.
Massage Oil: Blend with a carrier oil and apply to sore muscles for natural pain relief.
DIY Cleaners: Rosemary’s antibacterial properties make it a great addition to homemade surface sprays and air fresheners.
Bath Soaks: Add to a warm bath with Epsom salts to relax muscles and clear your mind.
⚠️ Safety Notes
While rosemary essential oil is generally safe, it should always be diluted before applying to the skin. Pregnant women, individuals with high blood pressure, and people with epilepsy should consult a healthcare provider before use.

The Origins of Zinc Winery: Where Grit Meets Grace
Zinc Winery began not with rolling vineyards or gleaming tasting rooms, but with a spark of inspiration in an unexpected place: a decommissioned industrial warehouse at the edge of wine country. The founders, a group of lifelong friends with roots in engineering, design, and viticulture, saw potential where others saw rust and concrete. They envisioned a winery that would honor both the strength of industry and the elegance of fine wine—and so, Zinc Winery was born.
The name “Zinc” was chosen deliberately. Zinc, a humble yet essential element, symbolizes strength, resilience, and versatility—traits the founders felt defined their journey and philosophy. They wanted to create a space where wine could be made and enjoyed with intention, where old-world techniques would meet new-world daring. From the beginning, they set out to break the mold—not to shock, but to surprise with refinement, integrity, and purpose.
With its roots in reclaimed space and its sights set on innovation, Zinc Winery quickly distinguished itself. The founders worked with local growers and sourced fruit from sustainable vineyards, carefully selecting grapes that reflected the richness of the region. Their winemaking approach married classic methods—like barrel aging and hand-picking—with clean, modern aesthetics and a dedication to precision. The result: wines that were layered, expressive, and unapologetically unique.
As the winery grew, so did its vision. What started as a passion project evolved into a destination. Zinc Winery expanded to include a sleek tasting room, a chef-driven bistro, and eventually, boutique guest suites overlooking the vines. Yet, despite its growth, the heart of Zinc remains unchanged: a place where bold ideas and beautiful wines coexist.
The origin of Zinc Winery is a story of transformation—of turning raw materials into refined experiences. It’s about honoring hard work, celebrating creativity, and inviting others to be part of something meaningful. Today, every glass poured at Zinc is a tribute to that original dream: gritty, graceful, and completely unforgettable.
