Bear Sightings Prompt Caution in Central NC

Two black bear sightings in as many weeks — one in Durham, the other in Raleigh — have prompted wildlife officials to urge caution across central North Carolina.

Experts from the NC Wildlife Resources Commission say such sightings are becoming more common as younger bears roam into suburban areas searching for food and new territory. Fortunately, both bears retreated without incident.

Officials remind residents to:

  • Secure trash and remove bird feeders

  • Avoid feeding pets outdoors

  • Keep a safe distance if a bear is spotted

Why Is National Donut Day Celebrated?

National Donut Day is more than just a reason to indulge in a sweet treat — it’s a celebration with deep historical roots. Established in 1938 by The Salvation Army, the day honors the “Donut Lassies,” the women volunteers who served donuts to soldiers during World War I. These brave women brought comfort and a taste of home to troops stationed overseas, often frying donuts in makeshift kitchens on the front lines.

The holiday was created during the Great Depression as a way to boost morale and raise funds for The Salvation Army’s charitable programs. Over time, National Donut Day has evolved into a fun annual tradition celebrated across the United States, where bakeries and donut shops offer free or discounted donuts to customers.

So, each year on the first Friday of June, when you bite into a donut, you’re also remembering the kindness and resilience of those who brought joy and comfort to soldiers during difficult times. It’s a sweet way to celebrate history, community, and of course — delicious donuts!

“Believe in the beauty of our future, for it is shaped by the hope and dreams we nurture today.”
