What’s Happening in Wake County?
Gov. DeclaresState of Emergency for Chantal Recovery
Governor Josh Stein has declared a state of emergency for 13 North Carolina counties hit hardest by flooding from Tropical Storm Chantal. The storm dropped up to a foot of rain earlier this month, causing major damage to roads, homes, and utilities across central NC.
Counties under the order include Wake, Durham, Orange, Alamance, Guilford, and Forsyth. The declaration will speed up aid and recovery efforts and allow access to state and federal disaster resources.
“Tropical Storm Chantal cost some of our neighbors their lives and others their homes,” said Gov. Stein. “This declaration ensures they get the support they need.”
Emergency teams have already conducted over 100 water rescues and are delivering bottled water, sanitation supplies, and mobile support units. Damage assessments are underway, and more assistance is expected in the coming weeks. Read More
Heat Advisory Issued for Central North Carolina on Friday
The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory for Friday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. across central North Carolina, including Raleigh, Durham, and Fayetteville.
Heat index values could reach up to 107°F, posing a risk for heat-related illnesses. Residents are urged to stay hydrated, limit outdoor activities, and check on vulnerable individuals and pets.
Scattered storms may develop but won’t provide much relief. Stay cool and take precautions during peak heat hours. Read More
Perseid Meteor Shower-How to Watch in North Carolina
The 2025 Perseid meteor shower will be visible through August. The peak night is expected around August 12-13, with up to 100 meteors per hour under ideal conditions.
For the best view in North Carolina, look skyward between 2 a.m. and 4 a.m. in a dark, open area away from city lights. No special equipment is needed—just bring a blanket or chair and let your eyes adjust to the dark.
The Perseids, known for bright streaks and occasional fireballs, come from debris left by Comet Swift-Tuttle. Whether you’re a seasoned stargazer or just curious, this is a great chance to catch a spectacular night sky show. Read More
Raleigh Police Search for Suspects in Church Car Break-In Spree
Raleigh police are investigating a recent crime spree involving break-ins of at least 31 vehicles at five local churches over the weekend. The targeted churches include Our Lady of Lourdes, Highland United Methodist, Providence, Summit, and Holy Name of Jesus Cathedral.
Surveillance captured suspects smashing windows and stealing valuables, including a handgun and $2,000 in cash from one vehicle. Police are actively searching for two suspects believed to be responsible.
Authorities urge residents to lock vehicles, remove valuables, and report any suspicious activity to Crime Stoppers at 919-834-4357. Despite this surge, overall vehicle-related crimes in Raleigh are down 14% from last year. Read More
Millions of Gallons of Sewage Spill into Eno River
Between 5.8 and 7 million gallons of untreated sewage spilled into the Eno River after flooding from Tropical Storm Chantal disabled a major pump station in Durham.
Officials warn the spill poses health risks due to bacteria and contaminants. Residents are urged to avoid swimming, fishing, or any contact with the river downstream until further notice.
Crews have stopped the flow and are working on repairs, but water quality testing is ongoing. Authorities will notify the public when it’s safe to return to the river. Read More
No, Don’t Leave Your Child or Pet in the Car—Even with the AC On. Here’s Why.
As summer temperatures climb, experts are warning: never leave a child or pet in a parked car, even if the air conditioning is running. It might seem safe, but cars can quickly become deadly if the AC fails or shuts off unexpectedly.
Mechanical issues, overheating, or automatic shutoff features can stop the AC without warning—causing interior temps to spike dangerously in minutes. Children and animals are especially vulnerable to heatstroke, which can happen fast and be fatal.
Play it safe: take them with you, every time. It's the only truly safe option.

Because we can all use some good news.
💖 How a Community Came Together to Bring Hope
In Durham, North Carolina, a beautiful story of kindness and community spirit unfolded in June 2025 that reminds us all how powerful small acts of goodness can be. When the Johnson family’s home was severely damaged by a fire on June 10th, leaving them displaced and overwhelmed, neighbors and strangers alike stepped up to help in a big way.
Within hours of the fire, friends organized a donation drive, collecting clothes, toys, and household essentials throughout June 11th and 12th. Local businesses generously contributed gift cards, meals, and even temporary housing options. Volunteers worked tirelessly over the following week to clean and repair the damaged home.
What made this story truly special was the ripple effect. Inspired by the generosity shown, several neighbors began hosting weekly community dinners starting the week of June 20th to support others facing challenges. A local school launched a kindness campaign on June 25th, encouraging students to write notes of encouragement to families in need. The spirit of giving sparked a wave of compassion that spread well beyond the Johnson family.
This heartwarming example reminds us that even in difficult times, human kindness shines brightest. When people come together with open hearts, they create hope, healing, and a stronger community. It’s a beautiful reminder that every act of goodness, no matter how small, can make a lasting difference.
"And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up."
— Galatians 6:9 (ESV)

🧬 New Discovery Offers Hope for Seniors: Breakthrough in Brain Health and Memory Preservation
Scientists have recently made a promising breakthrough in understanding how to protect and even improve brain health in adults aged 55 and older. A 2025 study published in the journal Nature Aging reveals that a naturally occurring protein in the brain, called Netrin-1, plays a crucial role in maintaining cognitive function and memory as we age.
Researchers found that boosting levels of Netrin-1 in animal models helped reduce inflammation and improve the connections between brain cells, effectively slowing down memory loss and cognitive decline. This discovery opens the door for new therapies aimed at enhancing brain health specifically for seniors, potentially delaying or preventing conditions like Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias.
While human trials are still underway, this exciting research highlights the importance of ongoing brain health support through lifestyle, nutrition, and soon, potentially targeted treatments. Read More
