What’s Happening in Wake County?
Peacocks in Wake County? Here’s What’s Going On
Summer in the Triangle usually means heat waves, backyard barbecues, and beach trips—but this year, it also means peacock sightings! From North Raleigh to Wake Forest and Knightdale (yes, one even tried to stroll into a Target), locals are spotting these colorful birds in unexpected places.
Are They Native?
Nope. Peafowl—peacocks (males) and peahens (females)—originate from Asia and Africa, not North Carolina. They’re usually pets or ornamental birds on private estates.
Most are escapees or young males roaming during mating season in search of territory or mates.
North Raleigh, Wake Forest, Knightdale, and even Apex have reported sightings this season. If one wanders through your yard, check with neighbors to see if it belongs to someone nearby. If it sticks around, contact Wake County Animal Control.
Keep an eye out—you never know when a flash of blue and green feathers might cross your path!
Goldsboro Fire Displaces 50 Residents
GOLDSBORO, N.C. – An accidental fire swept through an affordable rental community in Goldsboro, leaving about 50 residents displaced. Fire crews quickly contained the blaze, and no fatalities were reported, though several apartments are now uninhabitable.
The American Red Cross is providing emergency shelter and support. Donations to assist affected families can be made at redcross.org/donate.
Raleigh-The Big Question: Buy Now or Wait?
While some buyers hope for a big price drop, the data tells a different story. Raleigh’s median home price in June 2025 is $435,500, up 2.5% from last year. Home values are steadily rising, not falling, suggesting now could be a smart time to buy rather than wait.
Overnight Shooting at Wake County Mobile Home
Wake County deputies are investigating after a man was injured in an overnight shooting at a mobile home community.
Authorities say the incident happened late Tuesday night, though details about what led to the shooting have not been released. The victim was taken to the hospital with injuries, but officials have not said how serious they are.
Deputies confirmed they are continuing to gather information and interview witnesses. No suspect details have been made public at this time. Read More

💖 Meeting the Child Who Received Her Son’s Heart
In May 2025, Kaci Wilson of Hiawassee, Georgia, experienced a moment that was both heart-wrenching and profoundly healing. Two years earlier, Kaci had lost her twin son, Myles, in a tragic car accident. Amid her grief, she made the selfless decision to donate his organs, hoping to save other lives.
One of the lives Myles saved was 7-year-old Saleh Ahmad, who received his heart. On Kaci’s wedding day, she was surprised with a very special guest: Saleh and his parents. In an emotional moment, Kaci listened to her late son’s heartbeat through a stethoscope held by Saleh, a symbol of the life Myles continued to give.
Adding to the poignancy, Kaci’s surviving son, Kyler, walked her down the aisle alongside Saleh, referring to him as his “brother” due to the shared heart. Photographer Brianna Hemphill captured the scene—a beautiful mix of sorrow, joy, and profound connection.
Kaci hopes her story encourages others to consider organ donation, reminding us that even in the face of loss, love can endure, and lives can be forever changed. This unforgettable reunion is a testament to the power of giving, family, and the enduring bond between mother and child.
"And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up."
