What’s Happening in Wake County?
Young Leukemia Survivor Creates Homes for Families Near Duke Children’s Hospital
After more than two years of leukemia treatment, 12-year-old Harper Harrell knows how hard it can be for families to be far from home during a medical crisis. Inspired by her own journey, Harper and her mother launched Harper’s Home, a nonprofit providing housing for families traveling to Duke Children’s Hospital.
The Durham-based project currently has two homes open, with plans to expand to six more. Designed to be cozy and welcoming, the homes serve families living over 40 miles away, are pet-friendly, and operate on a sliding scale, making them accessible to all who need them.
Now in remission, Harper hopes the homes offer the same comfort and security she wished for during her treatment. “We want every family to feel safe and supported, even when they’re far from home,” she said.
Her story is featured this week on the Feel Good Flyover Podcast, where host Amy Hess interviews Harper and her mother about their mission and what every child should have while undergoing cancer treatment.
Harper’s Home is already providing hope, stability, and a sense of community for families facing challenging times.
Beware-Jury Duty Scams in Wake
Scammers are targeting residents by impersonating court officials or law enforcement, claiming you missed jury duty and threatening arrest unless you pay immediately. These calls often demand payment via gift cards, cryptocurrency, or wire transfers—methods that are always a red flag.
Important Facts:
Legitimate court or law enforcement offices will never demand payment over the phone.
Any fines or notices for missing jury duty are always sent via first-class mail, not by phone or email.
If you receive a suspicious call, hang up immediately and do not share personal or financial information.
To verify jury service or a missed appearance, contact your county’s clerk of superior court office directly. You can also report scams to the NC Attorney General’s Office at 1-877-5-NO-SCAM or online at ncdoj.gov.

Sudanese Volunteer Aid Groups Honored for Courage and Compassion
In the midst of conflict and uncertainty, a remarkable story of courage and humanity has emerged from Sudan. The “Emergency Response Rooms,” a network of volunteer aid groups, has been awarded the 2025 Norwegian Rafto Human Rights Award for their tireless efforts to help those most in need.
Despite the dangers posed by ongoing civil war, these volunteers have risked their own safety to deliver critical services to displaced and vulnerable communities. From medical care and clean water to electricity and food, their work touches lives every single day.
For the people they serve, the Emergency Response Rooms are more than just aid providers—they are a lifeline. Families who have lost everything to the conflict find hope and reassurance in the dedication of these selfless individuals. Their commitment is a reminder that even in the darkest times, human kindness can shine brightly.
The Rafto Award not only honors their bravery but also brings international recognition to a network that has become a beacon of hope across Sudan. It is a powerful testament to what ordinary people can accomplish when guided by compassion, resilience, and the belief that every life matters.
In a world often dominated by stories of hardship, the courage of Sudan’s volunteer aid groups serves as a reminder that acts of kindness and humanity can ripple far beyond what we see, inspiring hope, healing, and connection in even the most challenging circumstances.
