Escape to Duck, North Carolina: Coastal Charm and Serenity

Tucked between the Atlantic Ocean and the Currituck Sound, the town of Duck, NC is one of the Outer Banks’ most peaceful and scenic destinations. Though it wasn’t incorporated until 2002, the area has long been appreciated for its rich natural beauty and wildlife—especially the waterfowl that inspired its name back in the 1800s when it was a favorite spot for hunters.

Today, Duck is known for its quiet beaches, walkable village atmosphere, and the stunning sunsets you can enjoy from the mile-long boardwalk along the sound. The Duck Town Park offers 11 acres of green space, trails, and a playground, making it a great stop for families. Shopping is also a delight here, with locally owned boutiques, galleries, and waterfront restaurants that add to the town’s relaxed coastal vibe.

Visitors can kayak or paddleboard in the calm waters, take in live music at the amphitheater, or time their visit to catch the Duck Jazz Festival in the fall. Whether you're planning a summer getaway or a quiet off-season retreat, Duck offers a blend of nature, community, and charm that's hard to beat.

Savor the Sounds of the Duck Jazz Festival in North Carolina

Every fall, the coastal town of Duck, North Carolina, hosts a musical celebration that draws jazz lovers from across the region. The Duck Jazz Festival, now in its 16th year, returns October 11–12, 2025, offering a full weekend of free live performances and local festivities.

Held in the heart of Duck Town Park, the event brings together an impressive lineup of jazz musicians—ranging from classic and contemporary to funk and fusion—all against the scenic backdrop of the Currituck Sound. With open green space and a relaxed setting, visitors are invited to bring their own chairs or blankets and enjoy the music under the October sky.

But the festival is more than just music. Local shops and restaurants get into the spirit with jazz-themed specials and events throughout the week, including outdoor movies, storytimes, and family-friendly gatherings. The whole town comes alive with rhythm and community pride.

Whether you’re a seasoned jazz enthusiast or simply looking for a unique fall getaway, the Duck Jazz Festival offers the perfect blend of culture, charm, and coastal beauty. It’s an unforgettable experience that keeps people coming back year after year.

What’s Happening in Wake County?

Genentech Brings 420 Biotech Jobs to Holly Springs

Big news for Wake County: Genentech, a global biotech leader, is investing $700 million to build a 700,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in Holly Springs. The project will create 420 high-paying jobs—with average salaries near $120K.

The new site will handle high-volume fill-finish work for Genentech’s medicines and is part of a growing biotech boom in the Triangle. Construction is set to begin soon, with operations expected by 2029.

Holly Springs is quickly becoming a major player in life sciences—and this move puts it on the map in a big way.

Snake Causes Power Outage for Thousands in Wake County

An unexpected culprit slithered into the headlines this week—a snake—causing a power outage that left about 7,000 Wake County residents in the dark for nearly two hours.

The outage occurred when the snake came into contact with electrical equipment, disrupting service across multiple neighborhoods. Crews responded quickly and restored power without further issues.

Surprisingly, this marks the second snake-related outage in North Carolina in just one week, highlighting how wildlife can still pose challenges to modern infrastructure.

Veridea Project in Apex Delayed

Plans for Veridea, Apex’s massive $3 billion mixed-use development, are moving forward—but at a slower pace than many had hoped. While infrastructure work continues behind the scenes, developers say vertical construction isn’t expected to begin until 2027.

Spanning over 1,100 acres, the long-term vision for Veridea includes thousands of new homes, retail and office spaces, and the potential to support up to 30,000 jobs. However, the full buildout could stretch into the mid-2030s, making it one of the region’s most ambitious—but patience-testing—projects.

Despite the slow timeline, town officials remain optimistic, noting that once completed, Veridea will significantly reshape Apex’s economic and residential landscape.
