Follow the Yellow Brick Road to Autumn at Oz
High atop Beech Mountain, where the Blue Ridge views stretch for miles, one of North Carolina’s most magical fall traditions is waiting. From Friday, September 25, through Sunday, September 27, the historic Land of Oz will welcome visitors for the final weekend of Autumn at Oz—the world’s largest celebration of The Wizard of Oz.
The adventure begins at Aunt Em and Uncle Henry’s Kansas farmhouse. After experiencing the twister, guests emerge into the colorful world of Oz and follow a three-quarter-mile Yellow Brick Road made from 44,000 golden bricks. Dorothy, the Scarecrow, the Tin Man and the Cowardly Lion lead the way through live performances, music and memorable character encounters. Of course, the Wicked Witch may be lurking nearby!
Visitors will also discover food and craft vendors, face painting, Oz memorabilia, fun photo opportunities and a temporary Emerald City where everyone can meet the Great and Powerful Oz. Costumes are encouraged, so feel free to bring your ruby slippers!
Land of Oz is located in the Town of Beech Mountain, approximately 190 miles—or about a 3-hour-and-45-minute drive—from Raleigh. The neighboring town of Banner Elk, known for its charming shops, restaurants and mountain lodging, is only about 7 miles away, making it a convenient place to stay for the weekend.
General admission is $70, plus taxes and ticketing fees. Parking and round-trip shuttle transportation are included. Tickets must be purchased in advance for a specific date and arrival time and will not be sold at the festival entrance. For an additional $8, visitors can access the Over the Rainbow Observation Deck and enjoy sweeping views of the surrounding mountains.
The complete experience includes approximately 1½ miles of walking over stairs, slopes and uneven pathways. Wear sturdy shoes, dress in layers and be prepared for quickly changing mountain weather. Autumn at Oz takes place rain or shine.
