Beaufort Is Calling
Wake County, I have a proposal: Pack a small bag, leave the laundry for Monday, and head to Beaufort, North Carolina.
This little Crystal Coast town has a way of making a long weekend feel wonderfully long. The first order of business? Wander down Front Street. Browse a shop or gallery, find a spot by the water, and take your time deciding where to eat. In Beaufort, “What should we do next?” is a much better question than “What time is it?”
Saturday is for stories and sea breezes. Stop at the North Carolina Maritime Museum, then cross the street to see the Watercraft Center. Admission is free, and both are normally open Tuesday through Saturday, so make this your Saturday stop. Afterward, explore the Beaufort Historic Site or take a walk through the Old Burying Ground, where centuries of local stories rest beneath the trees.
Ready to put a little adventure in your getaway? Book a boat trip to Shackleford Banks, home to wild horses, or explore the Rachel Carson Reserve across Taylor’s Creek. The reserve is accessible only by boat, so check ferry options and the weather before you go. Give the horses plenty of space and enjoy the thrill of spotting them from a respectful distance.
Then comes my favorite travel activity: finding a good meal after a day outside. Beaufort has waterfront restaurants and tucked-away spots for seafood and Southern fare. Stay at an inn or bed-and-breakfast if you want to make the whole weekend feel like an occasion.
On Sunday, take one last slow stroll along the water. Buy a little something from a local shop. Order dessert. You can get back to the to-do list when you get home.
The getaway idea: Make Beaufort your home base for two or three nights, put the museum on Saturday’s calendar, and leave room for a boat ride and a gloriously unplanned afternoon. Explore lodging and trip ideas at Crystal Coast NC.

Small Dolls, Big Hearts 🧵❤️
Kindness comes with a little stuffing and a lot of love at Raleigh’s Waltonwood Lake Boone! Residents joined forces to handmake more than 60 KINDness Dolls for WakeMed Children’s Hospital.
K.I.N.D. stands for “Kids in Need of Delight,” and these dolls have a special purpose: helping medical teams explain procedures so children feel less frightened. Residents sewed, stuffed and packaged the dolls, choosing fabrics to reflect the diversity of the children receiving them.
A beautiful reminder that caring hands can make a big difference—one stitch at a time.
Little Inventors, Big Ideas
Got a young builder who loves asking “What if?” The Brainstorm STEAM Lab gives ages 5–10 a chance to turn that question into a hands-on engineering project. Kids will design, experiment, and discover that a first attempt is just the beginning.
