This Week’s Feature-Everything Fall in NC
🍂🚗 Fall Foliage & Coastal Drives on the North Carolina Coast
As the air turns crisp and the days grow shorter, the North Carolina coast transforms into a hidden gem of autumnal beauty. While the towering mountains of the west steal the spotlight for fall colors, the coast offers its own unique, enchanting display. Maritime forests shimmer with shades of gold, amber, and rust, while coastal marshes reflect the brilliant hues like a liquid canvas.
One of the most serene ways to experience this coastal splendor is by taking a drive along the Outer Banks Scenic Byway or Route 12. Wind along stretches of highway framed by delicate dunes, salt marshes, and stands of live oaks draped in Spanish moss. With every turn, a new tableau appears: fiery maples glowing against the deep green pines, cattails swaying gently in the breeze, and quaint seaside towns dusted in autumn colors.
The beauty of fall on the coast lies in its contrast—soft, golden leaves alongside shimmering blue waters, rugged dunes beside delicate marsh grasses, and the quiet charm of towns where the only rush is the sound of the waves. Stop along the route at local parks or wildlife refuges to stretch your legs, breathe in the salty air, and perhaps spot herons, egrets, or even a passing dolphin.
For photographers, nature lovers, or anyone simply seeking a peaceful escape, a coastal fall drive is a gentle reminder of the season’s magic. The NC coast may not boast towering mountains, but its autumn palette is just as breathtaking, painting a serene, unforgettable landscape that invites you to slow down and savor every moment.

What’s Happening in Wake County?
North Carolina Baby Who Spent Her First Year in the Hospital Finally Goes Home
For little Isla Johnson, the word “home” was something her parents dreamed of through tears, prayers, and countless hospital visits. Born with complex medical challenges, Isla spent every single day of her first year at UNC Children’s Hospital in Chapel Hill.
Her parents, Leah and Eric Johnson, made the nearly hour-long drive from their home in Liberty, North Carolina, every day — bringing songs, laughter, and gentle stories to fill her hospital room with love. Each night, leaving her behind was a heartbreak they endured with faith that someday, they’d all go home together.
That long-awaited day finally arrived on Isla’s first birthday. Surrounded by doctors, nurses, and therapists who had cared for her since birth, Isla was strong enough to leave the hospital for the very first time. The halls echoed with cheers and happy tears as her parents carried her into the sunshine — free from the machines and monitors that had been her world since day one.
“She’s our little miracle,” said Leah, her eyes filled with emotion. “We couldn’t have made it without the love and support of everyone at UNC.”
Now back home in Liberty, Isla’s nursery is filled with soft blankets, colorful storybooks, and the quiet peace of family life — sounds her parents once only imagined. For the Johnson family, every smile, every giggle, and every new milestone is a reminder that love and hope can carry you through even the toughest year.

🌟 A Day of Service in Wake County
On Saturday, October 4, 2025, over 200 volunteers gathered at the Wake County Community Center in Raleigh for the annual "Fall Into Service" event. Organized by the Wake County Volunteer Network, this initiative aimed to support local families and beautify public spaces ahead of the holiday season.
🛠️ Projects Included:
Renovating playgrounds in underserved neighborhoods
Assembling care packages for seniors
Planting fall gardens at community centers
Organizing a seasonal clothing drive
Participants of all ages came together, some with gardening gloves, others with paintbrushes, united by a common goal: to make their community a better place. The event not only provided tangible support to those in need but also fostered a sense of unity and shared purpose among residents.
In a world that often feels divided, moments like these remind us of the strength found in community. They show that when individuals come together, they can create lasting change and spread kindness throughout their neighborhoods.
Inspired by this story? You can make a difference too! Look for local volunteer opportunities in your area, whether it's helping at a food bank, participating in a park cleanup, or simply offering a helping hand to a neighbor. Every act of kindness counts and contributes to building a stronger, more compassionate community.
