North Carolina’s Sweet Summer Tradition

North Carolina is proud to be one of the top blueberry-producing states in the country, growing over 50 million pounds of these delicious berries every year! Thanks to the state’s warm climate and perfect soil, blueberry farming thrives, especially in the southeastern part of NC.

The sandy, acidic soil and mild temperatures provide ideal conditions for blueberry bushes to grow healthy and strong. Over 9,000 acres of farmland are dedicated to blueberries, making this crop a vital part of North Carolina’s agricultural heritage and economy.

What’s Happening in Wake County?

Help Replace the Iconic Waterwheel at Yates Mill

Yates Mill, Wake County’s last operable water-powered gristmill, needs your help. The historic wooden waterwheel—central to its charm and function—has worn down and must be replaced.

The nonprofit Yates Mill Associates is raising funds to build a new, historically accurate wheel at a cost of over $150,000.

Every donation helps preserve this rare piece of North Carolina history.

Learn more or give at www.yatesmill.org. Let’s keep the wheel turning for future generations!

New Rules on Synthetic Hemp

The North Carolina Senate is moving forward with a bill to ban synthetic hemp cannabinoids like Delta‑8 and impose new regulations on Delta‑9 THC products. The legislation would raise the minimum purchase age to 21, require child-resistant packaging and clearer labeling, enforce strict THC content limits through third-party testing, and mandate retailer licensing. Law enforcement would oversee compliance. Supporters, including public health officials and lawmakers from both parties, say the changes are necessary to protect youth and bring oversight to a rapidly growing, largely unregulated market. Triple-Digit Heat and Damaging Winds Headed for the Triangle

Residents across the Triangle should prepare for an intense stretch of summer weather this week, with triple-digit heat and the potential for damaging storms on the horizon. Forecasters predict temperatures will climb into the upper 90s, with heat index values making it feel well over 100°F, especially by early next week.

Thursday is expected to bring the highest risk for severe weather, including strong thunderstorms, gusty winds, and possible hail. The National Weather Service warns that these storms could cause power outages and tree damage in some areas.

Although a slight dip in temperatures is expected Friday and into the weekend—with highs in the low to mid-90s—the heat is forecast to return by Monday.

Officials urge residents to stay hydrated, limit outdoor activities during peak heat hours, and remain alert for storm updates. With extreme heat and the threat of sudden storms, taking precautions now can help keep families safe in the days ahead.

Be Animal Aware

Coyotes are becoming more visible across North Carolina, especially in late spring and summer as they search for food to feed their pups. These adaptable animals are drawn to suburban areas by easy food sources like garbage, pet food, and small animals. To keep them away, residents are advised to secure trash, remove outdoor food, and use motion-activated lights or sprinklers. If you encounter a coyote, make loud noises, wave your arms, or spray water to scare it off—never run. Pet owners should keep cats indoors, supervise dogs outside, and walk pets on short leashes, especially at dawn or dusk. If a coyote behaves aggressively or harms a pet, report the incident to local animal control or the NC Wildlife Resources Commission.

Community Comes Together to Revive Local Park in Durham

In Durham, a group of volunteers recently joined forces to transform a neglected neighborhood park into a vibrant community space. For months, local residents, families, and even nearby businesses pitched in—cleaning up trash, planting flowers, repainting benches, and creating a safe play area for children.

One of the organizers, Maria Lopez, shared, “We wanted to create a space where everyone feels welcome and proud to spend time. It’s amazing what a few hours of teamwork can accomplish.”

The revitalized park now hosts weekly family events, outdoor yoga classes, and a weekend farmers market featuring local growers. Thanks to these community heroes, a once-forgotten corner of Durham has become a lively gathering spot that brings neighbors together and sparks joy.

"And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up."
