Discovering Cheese in North Carolina: A Growing Tradition of Craft and Flavor
When most people think of North Carolina, they picture barbecue, sweet tea, and beautiful mountain landscapes. But the Tar Heel State is also quietly carving out a name for itself in the world of cheese. From handcrafted artisanal varieties to award-winning farmstead cheeses, North Carolina’s cheese scene is rich, diverse, and delicious.
A Flourishing Artisan Cheese Movement
Over the past two decades, North Carolina has seen a significant rise in small-scale cheese producers dedicated to quality and tradition. Many of these farms and creameries focus on sustainable practices, using local milk from cows, goats, and sheep raised with care. This dedication to craftsmanship has earned North Carolina cheeses recognition far beyond its borders.
Notable North Carolina Cheese Makers
Sutton’s Farm Cheese (West Jefferson)
Known for its handcrafted aged cheeses, Sutton’s Farm produces some of the state’s most celebrated varieties. Their cheeses often feature robust flavors that reflect the mountain terroir where the milk is sourced.Rising Creek Creamery (Morganton)
This family-owned goat cheese producer is known for fresh and tangy goat cheeses, including chèvre and aged varieties that have won national awards.Harmony Farms (Garner)
A notable goat farm making fresh and aged goat cheeses, Harmony Farms emphasizes natural ingredients and traditional cheesemaking methods.
Cheese Festivals and Events
North Carolina celebrates its cheese culture with festivals and events that bring producers and cheese lovers together. The Ashe County Cheese Festival (usually held in late May) showcases local artisans, offering tastings, workshops, and family-friendly fun. Events like this help educate the public about the art of cheesemaking and the importance of supporting local farms.
The Rise of Cheese in Culinary Scene
Local restaurants and markets across North Carolina are embracing these homegrown cheeses, incorporating them into dishes that highlight their unique flavors. From creamy cheeses melting atop sandwiches to tangy varieties paired with local wines and craft beers, North Carolina cheese is gaining a place on menus and in kitchens statewide.
Why It Matters
Supporting North Carolina’s cheese producers not only celebrates culinary craftsmanship but also helps sustain small farms and rural communities. It promotes sustainable agriculture and fosters a closer connection between consumers and the origins of their food.

🌪️ Hurricane Season in North Carolina: Be Ready Before the Storm Hits
Hurricane season is officially here in North Carolina, running from June 1 through November 30. While not every storm makes landfall, our state’s location along the Atlantic coast puts us at risk for hurricanes, tropical storms, and dangerous flooding.
🗓 When to Watch
The most active part of the season is usually mid-August through late October, but it’s never too early to prepare. Hurricanes can form quickly, leaving little time to react.
🧰 Be Prepared
Now is the time to make sure your household is storm-ready. Here's how:
Create an emergency kit with water, food, medications, batteries, and a flashlight.
Have a communication plan so your family knows how to stay in touch.
Review your insurance and take photos of valuables for documentation.
Know your evacuation routes and keep your gas tank at least half full during storm season.
🌬️ What to Do During a Storm
Stay informed through local news and official alerts from ReadyNC and the National Weather Service.
Avoid flooded roads, even if they appear shallow.
Follow local emergency orders for evacuation or shelter-in-place guidance.
Stay indoors and away from windows during high winds.
North Carolina has seen major hurricanes in the past, including Florence, Matthew, and Fran. The best way to stay safe is to prepare early, stay informed, and act quickly when warnings are issued.

Wake County Cuts Housing and EMS Funding
to Boost School Budget
Wake County commissioners approved a $2.17 billion budget for 2026 that increases funding for Wake County Public Schools by $40 million. To do this, the county reduced funds for affordable housing and cut 12 EMS positions.
The budget raises property taxes slightly to support new schools and staff raises but has drawn concern over cuts to public safety and housing. Commissioner Shinica Thomas voted against, saying public safety and housing shouldn’t be sacrificed for education.
The move highlights the challenge of balancing growth and priorities as the county adds over 66 new residents daily. Read More

Community Comes Together to Support Young Entrepreneur After Theft
In a touching example of kindness and community spirit, the people of Gatton, Australia, rallied around six-year-old Leo Tyers after someone stole money from his honesty box at his little fruit and vegetable stand just days before Christmas.
Despite this discouraging setback, Leo’s determination to keep going inspired locals to step in with generous donations of cash, produce, toys, and even security measures like cameras and a new, secure honesty box.
Starting with just $5 and a big heart, Leo’s shop—aimed at reducing food waste—has now become a shining example of resilience and the power of a supportive community. Leo has even been able to give back by distributing donation boxes filled with treats and produce to others in need.
This uplifting story reminds us how a small act of kindness can grow into something truly special when a community comes together. Read More
