Fishing in North Carolina

A Timeless Tradition with Endless Possibilities 🐟

North Carolina is more than just beautiful beaches and scenic mountains—it's a fisherman's paradise. With over 5,000 miles of fishable waters, including lakes, rivers, streams, and coastal estuaries, North Carolina offers year-round fishing opportunities for everyone from casual hobbyists to seasoned anglers.

North Carolina’s inland waters are teeming with life. Popular spots like Jordan Lake, Falls Lake, and Lake Norman are home to largemouth bass, crappie, catfish, and more. The Appalachian Mountains to the west offer excellent trout fishing, with wild and stocked streams flowing through national forests and state parks.

Fun Fact: The state is home to three species of trout—brook, rainbow, and brown—and even has designated trout waters managed for conservation and recreation.

Along the coast, the Outer Banks and surrounding inlets are world-renowned for surf, pier, and offshore fishing. Red drum, flounder, Spanish mackerel, and bluefish are common nearshore catches. Offshore charters target mahi-mahi, tuna, marlin, and more in the Gulf Stream waters.

Did you know?
The town of Morehead City hosts the Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament, one of the biggest sportfishing events on the East Coast—with millions in prizes and plenty of excitement.

To fish legally in North Carolina, residents and visitors over age 16 need a valid North Carolina fishing license—either inland, coastal, or unified. Licenses can be purchased online or at local sporting goods stores. The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission (NCWRC) and the Division of Marine Fisheries manage fish populations and promote sustainable practices to ensure future generations can enjoy fishing too.

Fishing in North Carolina isn’t just about the catch—it’s about the memories. Whether you're teaching a child how to cast for the first time or enjoying a quiet sunrise on a lake, fishing brings people together. Many public parks offer accessible piers, family fishing events, and even free fishing days (usually in early July), when no license is required.

🎣 So grab your rod, pack your bait, and explore North Carolina’s waters—from mountain trout streams to the salty surf of the Atlantic, there’s always something biting in the Tar Heel State.

Both cities earned praise for delivering strong public services while keeping spending low. The rankings reflect the Triangle’s growing reputation for smart governance and livability.

While the news is positive, some residents point out areas for improvement—particularly in public transit and urban planning—highlighting the need for continued investment and responsiveness as the cities grow.

🌿 Planting Kindness: Raleigh Teens Grow Gardens—and Hope—for Local Seniors 🌞

In a heartwarming display of community spirit, a group of high school students in Raleigh is making a meaningful difference—one garden bed at a time.

Through the nonprofit Grow Raleigh Together, these teens are spending their weekends building raised garden beds for senior citizens in underserved neighborhoods. The elevated beds make gardening more accessible for older adults and give them a chance to grow fresh vegetables, herbs, and flowers right in their own yards.

But the real magic happens beyond the soil. As the gardens take root, so do friendships between generations. Volunteers chat, laugh, and learn from the seniors they’re helping—turning quick projects into lasting connections.

“We just wanted to help,” said one student. “But we ended up getting just as much in return.”

So far, the group has built over 25 garden beds across Wake County, and they’re not stopping anytime soon. Their mission? To spread joy, encourage healthy living, and remind our seniors that they’re never alone.

Now that’s the kind of growth we love to see. 💚

"And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up."
