Hello friends!

Happy National Pie Day! Today, we officially give a standing ovation to the food that’s basically a hug in pastry form. Whether you’re team apple, cherry, pumpkin, or that mysterious ā€œsomething-in-the-fridgeā€ slice you found last week, may your forks be swift and your plates be ever full.

Let’s slice into today with joy (and maybe a little whipped cream on top).

See you out there in beautiful Wake,

This should be on your NC bucket list!

Duke Homestead State Historic Site in Durham offers a surprisingly lively window into North Carolina’s past, blending the story of a family farm with the rise of an industry that reshaped the region. Set on nearly 44 acres just minutes from downtown, the site preserves the original home and early tobacco operations of Washington Duke, whose post–Civil War entrepreneurship helped transform Durham into a national manufacturing center. Walking the grounds, you can trace the Duke family’s journey from small‑scale farmers to founders of what eventually became the American Tobacco Company, once the largest tobacco firm in the world.

The restored farmhouse sits at the heart of the property, offering a glimpse into mid‑19th‑century rural life. Nearby, a collection of barns and early factory buildings reveal how the Dukes cured, processed, and packaged their tobacco long before mechanized production took over. The on‑site Tobacco Museum adds another layer of context, exploring the agricultural, economic, and cultural impact of tobacco across North Carolina. A short documentary, Legacy of the Golden Leaf, rounds out the experience with a concise look at the family’s influence on Durham’s growth.

What makes Duke Homestead especially appealing is its accessibility—admission to the museum and grounds is free, and guided tours are available for visitors who want a deeper dive into the site’s history. Beyond the exhibits, the property offers peaceful walking paths and seasonal events that bring the past to life through demonstrations, harvest activities, and living‑history programs. It’s an easy, engaging outing for families, history enthusiasts, or anyone curious about how a modest farm became the starting point for a legacy that would eventually include Duke University and major philanthropic contributions across the state.

Because we can all use some good news.

Naples, Florida — Choosing Love Over Celebration

At a First Watch restaurant in Naples, Florida, the holiday season brought more than festive menus and busy mornings. It brought a moment of compassion that changed a life.

Every year, the staff sets aside money for a holiday party — a small but meaningful reward after months of hard work. But this year, the team decided to do something different. They knew their coworker Norman, a beloved member of the staff, and his wife Alicia had been quietly navigating the long, expensive journey of adopting a child. Becoming a father wasn’t just a dream for Norman — it was his deepest hope.

Without telling him, the entire team agreed to donate their holiday party fund to help cover the couple’s adoption expenses. No party. No gifts. Just love.

When the moment came, they gathered Norman and shared what they’d done. As they explained their decision, his composure broke. He covered his face, overwhelmed with gratitude, emotion pouring out as he realized his coworkers had chosen his future family over their own celebration.

The video of the surprise captured more than tears — it captured what community really looks like. These weren’t just coworkers. They were people who saw a need and stepped up together.

Norman later shared that the gesture reminded him he wasn’t alone on the journey to becoming a dad. His coworkers didn’t just help financially — they gave him hope, encouragement, and a story he’ll one day tell his child about how kindness helped bring them home.

Sometimes doing good doesn’t look loud or grand. Sometimes it looks like a group of people quietly giving up a party so someone else can build a family. šŸ’—

"And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up."
— Galatians 6:9 (ESV)
