🍷 Celebrate National Wine & Cheese Day in Wake!

While Wake County itself doesn’t have many vineyards, you’re just a short drive away from some wonderful wineries that make for the perfect wine and cheese getaway.

Mark your calendar for Wednesday, June 25, 2025, to celebrate National Wine & Cheese Day by visiting some nearby spots that offer fantastic wine tasting experiences and beautiful settings:

  • ZincHouse Winery & Brewery in Durham invites you to their “Art of Wine: A Tasting Experience” from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM—a great way to explore new wines and savor the moment.

  • Just a bit further out, Cloer Family Vineyards in Apex offers a charming countryside atmosphere. While their popular Picnic in the Vineyard event is the day after, it’s a perfect place to enjoy wine and cheese with friends and family.

Back in Raleigh, Taylor’s Wine Shop hosts regular tastings and events year-round. While nothing is specifically planned for June 25, it’s a great spot to find a curated selection of wines and cheeses to celebrate at home or with friends.

Whether you’re planning a visit to a vineyard or creating your own wine and cheese night, June 25 is the perfect day to raise a glass and indulge in some delicious pairings. Cheers to great wine, tasty cheese, and good company! 🧀🍷

What’s Happening in Wake County?

Record UV Index Sends More People to the Hospital

A recent spike in the UV Index has led to an increase in hospital visits due to severe sunburns and heat-related illnesses. With readings reaching “extreme” levels of 11 and above, unprotected skin can burn in under 10 minutes.

Health experts urge everyone to:

  • Use broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30+

  • Seek shade during peak sun hours (10 a.m.–4 p.m.)

  • Wear protective clothing and sunglasses

  • Stay hydrated

Check your local UV Index daily to stay safe in the sun. Taking these simple steps can help prevent painful burns and serious health issues. Resource

Gators in the Surf?

Beachgoers along the Carolina coast got a wild surprise last week when two alligators were spotted in the ocean—just days and miles apart.

The first sighting happened June 16 at Huntington Beach State Park in South Carolina. A gator was seen strolling the shoreline and briefly swimming in the surf. Just three days later, an 8-foot alligator turned up in the waves at Sunset Beach, North Carolina. Police safely removed and relocated the reptile.

Though rare, experts say gators can survive in saltwater for short periods—often after storms or heavy rains push them from freshwater areas.

Officials remind beach visitors: don’t approach, feed, or try to handle alligators. If spotted, alert local authorities immediately.

Vehicle Found in Wake County Lake Prompts Emergency Response

First responders were called to a lake in northern Wake County on Monday after a vehicle was discovered submerged near Serenity Lake Drive.

Deputies with the Wake County Sheriff’s Office and Northern Wake Fire Department responded to the scene around 2:45 p.m. The vehicle was partially underwater, prompting an immediate investigation.

Officials have not confirmed how the vehicle ended up in the lake, and no injuries have been reported. Authorities say there is no danger to the public at this time, but the incident remains under investigation.

Boa Constrictor Spotted in Cary

Customers at a McDonald’s in Cary got more than just burgers and fries Saturday afternoon when a 4-foot boa constrictor was found sunbathing near the drive-thru.

The snake was spotted outside the McDonald’s on Harrison Avenue around 2 p.m. A couple noticed it curled up in the sun and safely secured it in a box before calling local reptile expert Talena Chavis.

Chavis, who runs NC Snake Catcher, quickly responded and identified the reptile as a boa constrictor imperator, a non-venomous species. She believes it may have escaped from a nearby reptile show or private owner. For now, the snake is safe and awaiting either a reunion with its owner or a new home.

🌟 Raleigh Volunteers Bring Comfort to Homeless Pets —

And You Can Help!

This spring, a dedicated group of volunteers in Raleigh transformed an unused warehouse into a warm, welcoming shelter for homeless cats and dogs. Led by the nonprofit Paws & Claws Rescue, the shelter provides medical care, food, and loving foster homes for animals in need while they await their forever families.

The community has stepped up in a big way — from donations to volunteer hours, and even local schools organizing supply drives and educational visits to promote animal welfare. One volunteer said, “Seeing these animals find a second chance is the most rewarding thing I’ve ever experienced.”

Want to make a difference? Consider adopting a pet from Paws & Claws Rescue! Visit their website at pawsandclawsnc.org to view available cats and dogs, learn about the adoption process, and find out how you can bring home a new furry friend.

Giving a homeless pet a loving home not only changes their life — it will warm your heart too!
