Shackleford Banks: Home to wild horses, this island offers pristine beaches and a chance to witness nature up close.
Sugar Loaf Island: Located just off downtown Morehead City, it's perfect for a serene day trip.
Sand Dollar Island: A hidden gem where visitors can collect sand dollars and enjoy the tranquil surroundings.
These islands provide a unique way to experience the coastal beauty of North Carolina during the fall season.
Morehead City boasts a rich maritime history, evident in its historic waterfront and seafood industry. Indulge in fresh local seafood at waterfront restaurants like Jack's on the Waterfront, offering dishes that highlight the region's culinary traditions. Chapel Hill Continues Recovery Three Months After Chantal
Three months after Tropical Storm Chantal, Chapel Hill is making steady progress repairing trails and restoring damaged homes.
Flooding from the storm left parts of the Bolin Creek and Tanyard Branch trails washed out, but town crews expect major sections to reopen later this fall. Meanwhile, more than 60 homes sustained significant water damage, and local and federal funds are helping families rebuild and find temporary housing.
āChapel Hill has shown remarkable strength and compassion,ā said Town Manager Maurice Jones. āOur focus now is on full recovery for every resident and neighborhood.ā

A Fresh Start for Thomas Ray
In Ventura County, California, a man named Thomas Ray found himself at rock bottom. Once steady and full of promise, his life had slowly unraveledāfirst a heartbreak, then a lost job, and finally, a struggle with addiction that left him homeless. Nights blurred together on the streets, where every sunrise felt like a reminder of how far heād fallen. āI didnāt think Iād ever make it back,ā Thomas later admitted.
Then came a lifeline. Through the United Way of Ventura Countyās āUnited to End Homelessnessā Initiative, Thomas met Carie Bristow, a compassionate caseworker who saw him as more than his circumstances. Carie didnāt just hand Thomas a list of resourcesāshe walked beside him every step of the way. Together, they tackled one challenge after another: the low credit score that kept landlords from calling back, the endless paperwork, the fear that this chance might slip away like the others.
For the first time in years, Thomas had a safe place to restāa small hotel room provided by the program. āIt wasnāt just a roof,ā he said. āIt was hope.ā With stability came strength. He got sober. He found an apartment. He began dreaming againāof finishing school, of helping others the way Carie had helped him.
Today, Thomas Ray isnāt just housedāheās thriving. Heās proof that when compassion meets action, lives transform. The United Wayās program continues to help hundreds of people like Thomas rebuild from the inside out, offering not just housing, but the support and belief that everyone deserves a second chance.
⨠Because sometimes, the smallest kindnessāa helping hand, a patient voice, a safe place to sleepācan be the spark that brings someone home.
"And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up."
