Hello friends!

As summer rolls in, there’s something magical happening along the shores of North Carolina—sea turtles are nesting! These gentle giants return year after year to our beaches, quietly digging nests and laying the next generation of hatchlings beneath the stars.

If you're heading to the coast, keep an eye out (from a respectful distance!) for mama turtles or the tiniest hatchlings making their brave journey to the sea. It’s one of nature’s most inspiring sights—and a reminder of how lucky we are to call NC home.

Let’s all do our part to protect them: keep the beaches clean, lights low, and holes filled. The turtles thank you!

See you out there in beautiful Wake or at the beach!

🐢 Sea Turtles in North Carolina: Gentle Giants of Our Coast

North Carolina’s coastline is more than just a beautiful stretch of sand and surf—it’s also a vital nesting ground for some of the ocean’s oldest and most awe-inspiring creatures: sea turtles.

🌊 Who’s Nesting Here?

Each year, from May through October, five species of sea turtles may be spotted along the North Carolina coast, with three being the most common:

  • Loggerhead (most common nester in NC)

  • Green turtle

  • Leatherback (largest sea turtle species in the world!)

These ancient mariners return to the same beaches where they were born—sometimes traveling thousands of miles—to dig their nests and lay dozens of eggs in the soft sand.

🐣 The Journey of a Hatchling

After about 60 days of incubation, tiny hatchlings emerge and make the daring dash to the ocean. It’s a perilous journey: predators, lights, and obstacles can all interfere. Only about 1 in 1,000 hatchlings will survive to adulthood.

That’s why protecting nests—and educating beachgoers—is so important.

🚫 How You Can Help

Sea turtles need our help to thrive. Here’s how we can be good neighbors:

  • Keep beaches dark at night – Lights disorient hatchlings. Turn off beachfront lighting and use red LED flashlights if you're out at night.

  • Fill in holes & flatten sandcastles – These can trap hatchlings or block mothers from nesting.

  • Give turtles space – If you see one on the beach, keep your distance and remain quiet.

  • Leave no trace – Remove beach gear, trash, and fishing lines that can harm turtles.

🏖️ Local Heroes: NC Turtle Watch Programs

North Carolina is home to dozens of turtle watch and protection programs, including:

  • Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center (Topsail Island)

  • Cape Hatteras National Seashore Turtle Patrols

  • Bald Head Island Conservancy
These groups monitor nests, rescue injured turtles, and educate the public.

Interested in volunteering or taking a guided turtle walk? Many programs welcome summer volunteers and visitors!

🌟 Why They Matter

Sea turtles play a vital role in marine ecosystems, helping to maintain healthy seagrass beds and coral reefs. Their survival is a direct reflection of the health of our oceans—and our stewardship of them.

Let’s do our part to keep North Carolina a safe haven for these magnificent reptiles.

Husband Killed Alongside Minnesota State Lawmaker Was Raleigh Native, UNC Grad

Mark Hortman, husband of Minnesota State Representative Melissa Hortman, was tragically killed alongside his wife in a politically motivated shooting in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota. The couple, married for 31 years and parents of two, were attacked in their home by a gunman posing as a police officer.

Originally from Raleigh, North Carolina, Mark graduated from Millbrook High School and earned degrees in physics and computer science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He later worked in technology and e-commerce in Minnesota.

The suspect, a former political appointee, is believed to have targeted the couple due to their political stance. Authorities are still searching for him, with a $50,000 reward offered for information leading to his arrest.

🏠 From Storm to Shelter: NC Teens Build Tiny Home for Hurricane Survivor

When Hurricane Helene swept through North Carolina in 2024, it left behind more than just debris—it left some families, like Sherry Housley’s, without a place to call home. Sherry, a local artist from Burnsville, lost her house in the flooding and had been living in a small camper ever since.

But something remarkable happened.

A group of high school students from Mountain Heritage High School stepped up in a big way. As part of their honors carpentry class, and in partnership with the nonprofit Rebuilding Hollers, these teens spent their spring semester building Sherry a brand-new tiny home.

They did it with care, skill, and heart.

Sherry was overwhelmed with gratitude. “I was flooded with water,” she said through tears, “now I’m flooded with angels.

💛 Why It Matters

This story is a beautiful reminder that kindness comes in all sizes—and sometimes it looks like a tiny home built by big-hearted students. In a world that often feels chaotic, stories like this restore our faith in the next generation and the power of community.

Let’s keep lifting each other up. You never know the difference you might make.

"And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up."
Galatians 6:9 (ESV)
