Wake County Schools Brace for SNAP Cuts

The Wake County Public School System (WCPSS) is assessing how recent federal cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) could affect free meal programs. New eligibility rules may reduce the number of students qualifying for free breakfast and lunch, putting access to school meals at risk.

School officials are exploring alternative funding and policy solutions to ensure students continue receiving nutritious meals. Advocates stress that school meals are vital for child health and academic success, and WCPSS is coordinating with lawmakers and community groups to address the challenge. Read more

Courage on the Water: A Mother and Strangers Save a Life

On a quiet evening in Menasha, Wisconsin, what began as a routine drive turned into a moment of life-or-death urgency. A mother’s car accidentally slipped through a marina fence and plunged into the water—with her one-year-old baby strapped inside.

In those heart-stopping seconds, instinct took over. The mother freed her child and fought to keep them above the rising water. Then—just as the situation grew desperate—a stranger saw what was happening, scaled the fence, and dove in without hesitation. Two more bystanders followed, helping guide mother and baby to safety.

Local officials later praised their quick thinking and fearless response, noting that their combined courage prevented what could have been a heartbreaking tragedy.

This story is a powerful reminder: when crisis strikes, instinct and compassion can bring out the hero in all of us. Sometimes, it’s the courage of a parent. Sometimes, it’s the kindness of strangers. And sometimes, it’s both—working together to turn fear into hope.

"And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up."
